16 Loggerhead Sea Turtles Released in Torrevieja as Conservation Efforts Boost Population

Torrevieja welcomed a significant event as 16 loggerhead sea turtles, nurtured at the Oceanogràfic in Valencia, were released into the Mediterranean Sea. The release site was chosen based on the scientific principle of philopatry, with the support of local authorities, scientists, and the public.

The turtles, now ready to embark on their marine journey, were originally rescued from a nest laid by a mother turtle named 'Pura Vida' on Los Locos Beach. After being carefully nurtured and bred at the Oceanogràfic, they were transported to Torrevieja for their release.

The event was a culmination of collaborative efforts between the Oceanogràfic Foundation, scientists, the local government, and volunteers. Rosario Martínez, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, and Antonio Vidal, Councillor for Environment and Beach, were present to assist in the release, alongside Juan Antonio Pujol, a biologist, and local police.

The release of these 16 loggerhead turtles, listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, marks a significant step in their conservation. The Oceanogràfic Foundation's ongoing research and awareness efforts, supported by local authorities and the public, aim to ensure the survival and prosperity of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
