The city of Nordhorn, Germany, recently welcomed 18 teenagers and two female chaperones from the Ukrainian city of Chuhuiv for a ten-day leisure event. This initiative, which aimed to provide the teenagers with a much-needed break, was organised by volunteers from the Nordhorn city partnership committee and funded by donations collected during a solidarity concert for Chuhuiv.

Chuhuiv, located in the contested Charkiv region near the Russian border, has been the target of attacks, including drone strikes. The community of Coevorden, Netherlands, planned three days of the stay, while the city council of Nordhorn coordinated the remaining days of the visit.

The group was accommodated at the MoveInn in the Grafschafter Sport- und Freizeitpark in Nordhorn. During their stay, they visited the Nordhorn Zoo and Wildlands Zoo in Emmen, toured Burg Bentheim, and played mini-golf. The teenagers also participated in sports and cultural activities such as bowling, dancing, and swimming at the Nordhorn Delfinoh and Aqua Mundo.

A highlight of their visit was the trip to the North Sea. They also had a group barbecue by the campfire during their stay and explored the city centers of Nordhorn and Coevorden. The organiser of the event was the city of Nordhorn, with the initiative coming from the mayor of Chuhuiv, Galyna Minayeva.

Since this summer, the three municipalities (Coevorden from the Netherlands, Chuhuiv from Ukraine, and Nordhorn) have been official partner cities. Contact between the cities was established around two years ago. Initially, two transport vehicles with tools for damage repair in Chuhuiv were purchased with part of the donations. The remaining funds were used for the leisure time event.

The concert by the Nordhorn music school raised over 100,000 euros, making it a significant contribution to the event's success. Key organisers of the event included Achim Haming, Sigrid Maschmeier, and her husband Holger, and Elena Baal. The arrival and departure by train took two and a half days each.

This leisure event was a testament to the strong bond between the partner cities, providing a memorable experience for the teenagers from Chuhuiv and reinforcing the spirit of solidarity and friendship between the three cities.
