Transforming Train Travel: A Glimpse into the Future

The United Kingdom's train company LNER, in partnership with applied futurist Tom Cheesewright, is envisioning a radical transformation in train travel by 2075. The focus will be on speed, sustainability, comfort, and an unparalleled passenger experience.

Key predicted advancements include hyper-fast trains, enhanced sustainability, immersive passenger experiences, personalized travel environments, seamless integration with urban transport, and more.

Hyper-fast trains could become a reality through new propulsion technologies or maglev-like systems, potentially slashing travel times significantly.

Enhanced sustainability will be achieved by powering trains with green energy sources such as advanced batteries, hydrogen fuel, or other zero-emission technologies.

Immersive passenger experiences will be facilitated by augmented reality and interactive environments, transforming travel into more engaging or productive time.

Personalized travel environments will adapt lighting, seating, and entertainment to individual preferences, enhancing comfort.

Seamless integration with urban transport will be ensured via smart mobility hubs, making transfers between trains and local transit effortless.

These predictions are based on the "Train of the Future" concept, which was showcased in LNER's 2025 pop-up in London. The initiative combines futuristic design with practical innovation to meet long-term sustainability and passenger demand goals.

Other anticipated features include odourless food, self-balancing food trays, augmented reality for surreal scenes and gamification, cinema-style onboard entertainment, family playrooms, wellness carriages, 'nap pods', and even 'treadmill seats' on long journeys.

Furthermore, the train travel of 2075 could see the implementation of technologies such as facial recognition to replace ticket barriers, pre-saved customer preferences for seats, and 3D technology to print metals for the trains.

The need for constant entertainment during train travel, with 60% of people surveyed expressing this need, will be met with these advancements. Additionally, 44% of people consider relaxation as a main selling point of train travel, and 57% desire trains with 360-degree views.

In other railway news, Railway 200, celebrating 200 years of the modern railway, started in January. Various events and activities for the public will take place across 2025 as part of the celebration.

Moreover, a £5 scenic train journey along the UK's coastline is already available, showcasing the country's natural beauty.

The "Train of the Future" by LNER will be showcased at London King's Cross Station from July 30 to August 1, offering a glimpse into the future of train travel.
