anticipated alterations in Danish lifestyle in April 2025:
** Denmark's April transformation ** by Mike B
Get ready to pack your bags and dig deeper into your wallet this coming April, as Denmark unleashes a slew of changes - from tax rebates to parking charges in Copenhagen, and more!
Money in your pocket
Denmark's tax authority, SKAT, will start handing out rebates from April 25th. Based on your tax return from the previous year, around three-fourths of citizens may find themselves with a bit more cash in their pockets!
If you haven't submitted your annual return yet, make sure to get it done as soon as possible to secure your refund early. Just remember, the exact amount will depend on your personal circumstances and tax situation.
For a more detailed understanding of annual tax statements, check out our article Årsopgørelse: What foreigners in Denmark should know about annual tax statements.
Got electricity, will travel
The good news keeps rolling as electricity prices drop from April 1st as utility companies switch to summer tariffs. This means that average residents could save up to half on their electricity bills during peak usage hours!
But remember, the unit price might still vary during the summer months, as solar power production could lead to lower electricity prices during the day, between 11am and 4pm. Check out Why your Danish electricity bill will get cheaper from April 1st for more details.
Copenhagen parking, now costlier
Motorists planning to leave their car in Copenhagen better prepare their wallets. From April 1st, the city will introduce paid parking on Sundays and hike rates in all zones except for resident permit holders. only the first hour will be free on Sundays, with rates across the city increasing (excluding Frederiksberg).
Note that the outgoing prices will vary depending on the specific zone in the city you reside, with red, green, blue, and yellow zones each having different rates. So be sure to check out Copenhagen to introduce Sunday parking charges and higher rates from April 1st to know the updated fees for your area.
Easter holidays: extended break
The Easter holidays in 2025 fall three weeks later than in 2024 and will entirely be within April. Starting April 13th, students can enjoy a well-deserved break that could provide a great opportunity for a long weekend if you take a few days off from work.
This year's Easter public holidays will be celebrated on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. Check out How to make the most of Denmark's public holidays in 2025 for some ideas on making the most of your break.
Travel to the UK for EU Citizens
We're sad to inform EU citizens, including Danes, that as of April 2nd, you'll need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit the UK. The permit costs £10 and is valid for up to six months. However, remember, the ETA does not guarantee entry and you must still go through border checks.
Also, if you've paid for an ETA through an unofficial website, you can find guidance on getting your money back through the article Can I get my money back if I've paid for an ETA through an unofficial website?.
Ryanair departs from Billund
Ryanair will cease flights from Billund as of March 31st, after announcing the closure of its base and withdrawal of all services from the Jutland airport. Make sure to find alternative flights with other airlines, as many have already announced new routes from Billund to fill the gap.
If you had a booking with Ryanair, they should have already contacted you about the cancellation, and you can find a list of new flights available in LISTED: The new flights from Denmark this spring and summer.
Farewell to Great Prayer Day
Denmark said goodbye to Great Prayer Day in 2023, meaning last year was the last time it was celebrated as a public holiday. However, many cultural practices connected to Easter and Great Prayer Day, such as eating warm hveder, cardamom-infused buns, and the konfirmation celebrations will likely continue.
Restrictions on alcohol sales to under-16s
Starting April 1st, Denmark will enforce stricter restrictions on sales of alcoholic drinks to those aged 16 to 18. Police will also have the power to nominate nightlife zones where bars will be forbidden from selling alcohol to under-18s after 10pm.

Switch to summer tyres
While rules regarding the use of winter and summer tyres in Denmark are not yet official, the broad recommendation from FDM, the Danish membership organization for motorists, is to make the switch to summer tyres around Easter or in late April, which is when temperatures stay above 7 degrees Celsius overnight.

Organic Day
Always wanted to see Danish cows frolicking in the fields? April 15th is the perfect opportunity as it's Økodag, or Organic Day, when organic farms release their cows from winter enclosures. Tens of thousands of people typically attend the event, so be sure to plan your visit in advance and book a spot on the Økodag website.
