Ascension Weekend Traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia: Preparing for Heavy Congestion

During the forthcoming Ascension weekend, North Rhine-Westphalia motorists face increased traffic and lengthy congestion, particularly in the initial stages. According to ADAC, last year's day before Ascension recorded 779 congestion hours, placing it amongst the year's top ten most congested days.

Despite the absence of official school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday, many students have a flexible holiday day. Simultaneously, in numerous other federal states, the bridge day is a public holiday, leading to a potential influx of short vacationers. Approximately 700 construction sites within North Rhine-Westphalia could contribute to extended wait times.

"Areas with reduced lanes pose a significant risk of congestion," warns Roman Suthold, head of the traffic and environment department at ADAC North Rhine. He predicts that the motorways encircling Cologne and the Ruhr region will experience severe traffic pressure and an abundance of construction sites.

ADAC anticipates the heaviest traffic on Wednesday between 13.00 and 19.00, as commuters and short vacationers share the roads. Travellers setting off in the evening or on Thursday may encounter faster and more relaxed journeys.

On Sunday afternoon, return traffic will result in congested roads once more; however, Suthold expects fewer congestion hours compared to the weekend's beginning, as there are no commuters on the road.

Although using country roads to avoid Autobahn traffic jams may seem appealing, Roman Suthold advises against it, as the detour routes can also become quickly congested. He recommends diverting only when faced with Autobahn traffic jams exceeding ten kilometers or complete closures.

For a less congested journey during Ascension weekend, motorists are encouraged to avoid major roads, utilize traffic apps, bypass urban areas, depart earlier, and remain informed about local traffic updates, road closures, and special events. Planning ahead, staying informed, and considering alternative routes can significantly reduce travel time and make the experience more enjoyable.

In light of the predicted heavy Ascension weekend traffic, it would be beneficial for motorists to familiarize themselves with the community policy regarding car-maintenance and possible carpooling options to minimize congestion. Additionally, considering a flexible lifestyle during travel, such as scheduling trips during less congested hours, could contribute to a smoother journey, reducing the need for lengthy car-maintenance stops.
