"Be cautious about your skills" - Specialists advise mountaineers and skiers thronging to the Japanese Alps following unprecedented rescues
Warning for Adventurers: Skyrocketing Rescues in Japan's Nagano Prefecture
Gear up, adventurers! A word to the wise after Japanese authorities issued alarming reports on the staggering number of hiking and skiing rescues in 2024 – a record-breaking year!
Mountains of Nagano Prefecture, the renowned Japanese Alps, welcomed a whopping 321 visitors who found themselves in distress. This is a series of unfortunate events, skyrocketing from the previous record of 302. To put it bluntly, 13 unfortunate souls didn't make it back home, leaving a trail of concern across the adventure community.
Nagano Prefecture boasts the tallest peaks in Japan, with several towering mountains exceeding 10,000 feet. Every year, brave hearts flock to test their mettle against the steep slopes, while skiers glide down the mountain ranges in winter months.
But here's the thing: overconfidence and Mother Nature's whims have taken a heavy toll. Polar blast or scorching heat, both extremes have led to difficulties for the unprepared.
"Last year was a rollercoaster of weather," says Paul Christie, the mastermind behind Walk Japan. "Heavy snowfall presented perfect skiing conditions but also heightened the risk of accidents due to the deeper snow and rambling terrain."
"The summer season broke the record for heat, making it incredibly easy to underestimate one's endurance," Christie adds.
The stats break down like this: roughly one-third of the incidents involve slips, another nineteen percent are due to falls andsharp injuries, while a quarter of call-outs were for those severely exhausted. Harrowingly, more than forty percent of all incidents concerned senior citizens, age 60 and older.
Skiing mishaps, mainly avalanches and downhill accidents, were common culprits.
Although the data didn't confirm it, foreign visitors might have played a part in the rescue spike. Christie speculates, "More travel-hungry tourists are in Japan now, many with skiing on their bucket list. They need to remember these environments can be unyielding, and proper preparation is crucial."
