In a bid to address the growing demand for care services, Berlin is set to simplify the recognition of foreign care qualifications and implement a series of initiatives aimed at improving care in the city. The Berlin Care Plan 2025, a comprehensive strategy for care services, emphasises the importance of supporting communal living forms, such as care WGs, and strengthening care planning and control at the state level.

The plan also focuses on preventing care dependency through suitable preventive measures, such as home visits for people aged 70 and over. This proactive approach is expected to significantly impact the number of people in need of care, particularly for the baby boomer generations, according to Senator Czyborra.

To ensure the success of these preventive offers, Senator Czyborra stressed the significance of early intervention, health promotion, and community services that support independence. The goal of the care support points in Berlin is to enable people to live longer and more securely at home.

In an effort to support caring relatives, the Berlin Care Plan also emphasises the importance of providing training programs, respite care services, and financial assistance for caregivers. Around three dozen care support points in Berlin aim to provide advice on making apartments safer and preventing falls.

Recognising the challenges ahead, Senator Czyborra warned that inaction could lead to a major problem in the future. In light of this, he advised Berlin not to save at this point, particularly during upcoming budget negotiations.

The expansion of short-term care places is another key initiative of the Berlin Care Plan. As of now, over 87% of those in need of care in Berlin are cared for at home, usually by relatives with some help from outpatient services.

Berlin's commitment to improving care services extends beyond its borders. The city has been involved in various health-related initiatives, such as the Cities for Better Health program, which aims to promote a healthier urban environment. Berlin also hosts significant health-related events like the World Health Summit and the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence, highlighting its role in global health innovation.
