British Explorer to Kayak Oman's Entire Coastline for Whale Study and Pollution Awareness

British explorer Mark Evans is set to embark on a two-month kayaking journey along Oman's entire 3,165km coastline. His expedition, supported by Omani shipping company Asyal and various environmental organisations, aims to study whale life and raise awareness about marine pollution.

Evans, who has previously explored the Arabian Peninsula, will use a custom-made Greenland-style kayak for the journey. He plans to start each day an hour before sunrise, camping outdoors along the way.

The expedition seeks to uncover secrets of Oman's critically endangered humpback whale and dugong populations, as well as its diverse coral reefs. Evans will use hydrophones to record whale sounds and take water samples to track marine life.

He is particularly concerned about the growing volume of litter and plastics in the sea, which he hopes to highlight as Oman's cities, like Duqm, continue to expand. The expedition involves schools in Oman and the UK, as well as exploration societies, aiming to educate about the impact of coastal development on marine ecosystems.
