Germans Hit the Road: Record-Breaking Tourism Overnight Stays at Campgrounds

Overnight camping participation sets new all-time record - Camping nights experienced a significant surge, reaching an all-time peak.

Step into the groove of Germany's booming tourism scene as overnight stays at campgrounds in 2024 reached a never-before-seen record high of 42.9 million. This colossal surge marks a snug 1.4% increase from 2023 and a skyrocketing 19.9% increase from the pre-COVID-19 year of 2019, according to the Federal Statistical Office.

From the shores of the Baltic Sea to the heart of the Black Forest, the past two decades have seen a doubling of these overnight stays. Winding back to 2004, campers graced only 21.4 million German campgrounds. In contrast, the total number of overnight stays increased by nearly half in the same period.

In recent years, camping holidays have seized the limelight with almost continual growth in overnight stays, especially after the travel restrictions and accommodation bans of 2020 and 2021. The surge in recreational vehicles (RVs) only adds fuel to the fire. As of April 2024, more than one million RVs were registered in Deutschland, thanks to a whopping 150% increase in registrations since 2015, according to the Caravaning Industry Association.

Given this astronomical increase in stays, it's no wonder that prices at campgrounds have risen too. The Federal Statistical Office reports that the cost of an overnight stay has skyrocketed, with RV parking spots climbing nearly 28% since 2020, and camping fees following close behind – increasing by about 25%.

The Germans’ affinity for the great outdoors remains undeterred, as favorite destinations like the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast (3.4 million stays), the Black Forest (2.6 million), the Lower Saxony North Sea coast (1.9 million), and the picturesque Bavarian Allgäu (1.7 million) continue to grace their itineraries.

Interestingly, international guests are particularly drawn to the southwest of Germany. In 2024, they spent the vast majority of their nights in the Black Forest, the Mosel-Saar region, the Rhineland-Palatinate Eifel, Lake Constance-Oberschwaben, and the Bavarian Allgäu.

The allure of camping extends far beyond the shores of this European giant, with many reveling in the subsequent savings, adventure, and immersion in nature. But be prepared to open your wallet a little wider – campground fees are on the rise!

  • Travel Rebound: The post-pandemic rebound in travel, coupled with an increased desire for nature-based experiences, has contributed to the resurgence of camping vacations.
  • Motorhome Exploration: With the booming RV market, more travelers are embracing self-contained exploration – often embracing campground stays along the way.
  • Variable Demand: Although the overall trend is positive, price increases and concerns about affordability could potentially impact demand, especially for budget-conscious travelers.
  1. Following an unprecedented surge in overnight stays at campgrounds in Germany in 2024, the community policy of the Federal Statistical Office has recognized the need for increased vocational training programs for those in the camping and home-and-garden industries to accommodate the influx of tourists.
  2. In the Rhineland-Palatinate region, local campgrounds are capitalizing on the trending lifestyle of motorhome exploration by offering special features that cater to travelers with RVs, such as large parking spaces, electric hook-ups, and access to vocational training opportunities for groundskeepers and managers.
  3. The dramatic increase in camping overnight stays during the past decade has made the tourism sector a lucrative career choice for numerous individuals seeking employment in vocational training programs related to the camping and home-and-garden industries.
  4. While travelers convene at campgrounds in popular destinations like the Baltic Sea coast and the Black Forest, concerns over the rise in campground fees and continued price increases due to the booming tourism industry have led many to question the affordability of the average stay for budget-conscious travelers.
