Carp Season Kicks Off in Middle Franconia with Bavarian Minister-President's Support
The new carp season in Middle Franconia kicked off with a removal event at Langenzenn ponds, attracting Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder and highlighting the region's connection to this traditional fish. The event, organised by the regional initiative 'Gutes aus dem Fürther Land' and the district of Fürth, marked the start of a season where fresh carp will grace many inns' menus between September and April. Carp, a regional product, is deeply rooted in Franconia's culture and gastronomy, with 'Fischküchen' being a prime example. With around 5,500 pond owners operating about 20,000 hectares of ponds, the average pond size is approximately 3.5 hectares. Carp farming has been a part of Franconia's heritage for centuries, with many ponds dating back to medieval times. Despite challenges like climate change and marketing issues, the industry contributes significantly to the regional economy, with an estimated 750 tons consumed during the season, equivalent to about 1.2 million portions. Söder, expressing his connection to Franconia and rural regions, acknowledged the difficulties faced by pond owners. District Administrator Bernd Obst thanked Söder for his visit and wished the carp season success. The carp removal event at Langenzenn ponds signalled the start of the new carp season in Middle Franconia, celebrating the region's rich culinary tradition and the importance of carp to its economy. With Minister-President Söder's support and the dedication of local organisers, the season looks set to be a successful one for Franconia's pond owners and gastronomes alike.
