Coastal Retreat Assessment: Gallivant at Camber Sands - Boasting Stunning Seafood and a Knack for Joy

Nestled on the picturesque coast of Rye, England, The Gallivant Hotel has been named Small Hotel of the Year in the 2024 VisitEngland Awards and received a Michelin Key. This charming hotel offers a unique blend of coastal tranquility and exquisite dining, making it an ideal destination for those who appreciate good food and the sea breeze.

Upon waking, guests can indulge in a sumptuous breakfast spread at Harry's, the hotel's restaurant named after its owner, Harry Cragoe. The breakfast menu features an array of local cheeses, charcuterie, smoked salmon, yogurt, fresh fruit and vegetables, a home-made 'pick-me-up' shot, and a Bloody Mary 'recovery station' for those who had gone too hard at the hotel bar the night before.

Dining at Harry's is an experience in itself. The executive chef, Matthew Harris, previously worked at Bibendum and aims to make Harry's stand out from being a hotel restaurant. Harris primarily uses French and British cuisine and emphasizes the use of local, seasonal produce. The catch of the day is popular among diners, while the starter of freedived grilled scallops with fennel puree, tomato, saffron, and broad beans, followed by an enormous piece of skate with capers, lemon, pomelo, and butter, is a delightful treat.

For those seeking a more relaxed dining experience, a 'drinks in the dunes' option is available, where guests can take cocktails and picnic blankets to the nearby sandy beach.

The hotel also hosts an 'English wine at 5' event daily, offering guests a chance to sample local wines and unwind after a day of exploration.

The Cromarty room, one of the individually and thoughtfully crafted rooms, features a luxurious bath tub and an enormous bookcase filled with titles such as The Cinnamon Bun Bookstore, a picture book about the history of surfing, and Ovid's Erotic Poems.

Lindsay Austin, the head of happiness at The Gallivant, looks after everyone at the hotel and caters to every request, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay for all guests.

The historic 12th century Church of Saint Mary in Rye is worth visiting, while The George in Rye is a great place for cocktails. For those craving fish-and-chips, Marino's Fish bar in Rye is recommended.

The Gallivant hotel is suitable for those who enjoy good food, the coast, and tranquility. Room rates start at £165 a night for two people on a room-only basis. The hotel also offers yoga classes, both indoors and on the beach, for guests seeking a more active stay.

Whether you're seeking a culinary adventure, a tranquil retreat, or a blend of both, The Gallivant Hotel in Rye promises an unforgettable experience.
