Tragedy in Puerto Rico: Kevin Mares, 25, Fatally Shot During Bad Bunny Concert Visit

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old man from Queens, was fatally shot during a visit to Puerto Rico to attend a Bad Bunny concert. The shooting occurred early on August 10, 2025, in the La Perla neighbourhood near Old San Juan.

Mares was an innocent bystander during a heated argument that escalated into gunfire. Kalel Jorell Martinez Bristol, a 37-year-old man without a firearms license, opened fire, wounding two people and fatally striking Mares[1][2][3].

Martinez Bristol was promptly arrested and charged with first-degree murder and two counts related to weapons law violations for possessing and discharging a firearm without a license. He is currently being held on an $800,000 bond and is scheduled for a court hearing on August 28, 2025[1][2].

Kevin Mares was not involved in the altercation. He was with his girlfriend, who was also in Puerto Rico with him, and a friend. Tragically, Mares was walking in San Juan's La Perla section when the shooting occurred[4]. His girlfriend and friend were unharmed.

Mares was born and raised in Queens, with one younger brother. He was originally from Mexico but had made a life for himself in New York. Mares was a dedicated individual, balancing his studies to become a veterinarian with two part-time jobs[5]. He had a deep passion for animals, a dream that was cut short by this senseless act of violence.

His family, who are long-time Queens residents, are mourning his loss deeply. They described Mares as a loving son who cared for his family and friends. A wake was held for him in Queens on August 16, 2025, and the family is working with Puerto Rican authorities to bring his body home for funeral arrangements[3][4][5].

The Department of Justice in Puerto Rico has vowed that Mares’ death will "not go unanswered" and is committed to ensuring that the accused faces the full weight of the law[2]. This tragic incident occurred amid a surge of visitors attending Bad Bunny's sold-out concert residency in Puerto Rico.

The Mares family received support from loved ones on Sunday night. They are hoping for his body to be returned home to Queens as quickly as possible. Our thoughts are with the Mares family during this difficult time.
