Slack Summer Holiday Booking Season for TUI Customers

Customers of Tuifly Delay Booking Summer Holidays Later - Customers of Tui delay booking their summer holidays

Hey there! Today we're talking about the travel giant TUI and their customers' holiday booking habits for the upcoming summer. Kicking off with a curveball thanks to the late Easter date, TUI is experiencing a delay in revenue and profits traditionally associated with Easter holidays during the winter half-year. But fear not, TUI's CEO Sebastian Ebel remains optimistic about the current fiscal year, even with trade conflicts and customs chaos raising their ugly heads.

Interestingly, people aren't just making Easter weekend plans a more relaxed affair. Ebel shared that overall, summer trip bookings are coming in later than usual, as per TUI's announcement in Hannover. Despite this slow start, Ebel believes TUI is still on track for greater revenue and profits due to anticipated increases in travel prices and an upswing in bookings as the summer rolls around.

However, it seems the stock market isn't as excited about TUI's prospects, with the company's share losing a staggering nearly 11% in early trading and ranking as the biggest loser in the MDax. Now, let's talk about why people are taking their time to pick that tropical paradise for their annual vacation.

Economic conditions are likely a major factor in this trend. As customers grapple with economic uncertainty, they may find themselves hesitating to commit to vacation plans. Another factor could be lingering health concerns and travel restrictions exacerbated by ongoing global health issues. And who can blame them? Price sensitivity is another angle to consider; people might be shopping around for the best deals before putting their beach umbrella in the sand.

Looking back at 2025, TUI managed to reduce its seasonal loss in the winter season, with revenue growing by almost 8% to around 8.6 billion euros compared to the previous year. The adjusted operating loss shrank by 15% to 156 million euros. That being said, tour operators and airlines typically experience losses during the winter months, as TUI found when they slipped further into the red.

Come summertime, though, it's a different game altogether. Vacations are what keep TUI going even in tough times. While the company had counted one percent fewer travel bookings for the main summer travel season compared to the year prior, they managed to almost match their volume of UK bookings by May 4 compared to the same period in 2024. However, the German market lagged behind by 3%.

Despite the early sluggishness, TUI is staying hopeful about a plot twist in the story, and travel prices for the summer are trending an average of 4% higher than a year ago. So, if you're considering joining the tropical getaway crowd, be prepared to shell out a few extra euros for your sun lounger.
