Decrease in Tourist Arrivals in Berlin; Increased Presence of Chinese Visitors

Decreased tourism in Berlin during the first half of the year, unlike the prior year, was not due to rain, according to the tourism association. Instead, the cause remains unspecified.

Decline in International Tourists Affects Berlin's Tourism in 2025

Berlin, the vibrant capital city of Germany, has seen a dip in tourist numbers and overnight stays in the first half of 2025. This decline, while not affecting domestic tourism, has been a concern for the city's tourism industry.

According to data from accommodation providers, there were around 13.9 million overnight stays in the first half of the year, marking a decrease of nearly three percent compared to the previous year. The decline in international tourists was significant, with a drop of nearly five percent.

However, the story is not all gloomy. Domestic tourism has shown a positive trend, with an increase of 7.4 percent, compensating somewhat for the international decline.

Countries Showing Increased Interest in Berlin

Despite the overall dip, there are some countries that have shown significant increases in tourist arrivals in Berlin. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom are among the top international source markets, alongside Germany (domestic travelers).

There was a notable rise in guests from the UK (4.6 percent of guests, up from 4.1 percent in 2024) and the USA (4.3 percent, up from 3.4 percent). The USA now holds the second position in terms of popularity for Berlin tourists and overnight stays, after the UK.

China's Role in Berlin's Tourism

With over 42,000 guests, the People's Republic of China still plays a minor role in Berlin's tourism. However, the number of tourists from this country increased significantly, nearly 30 percent compared to the previous year. This trend was particularly noticeable in June, with over 14 percent fewer guests from other countries than in the same period last year.

Factors Affecting Tourism

Christian Tänzler, spokesperson for Visit Berlin, attributed the decline in international tourists to poor connection to non-European countries at Berlin's airport BER and high location fees, which make flights more expensive and dampen demand. Additionally, the rainy weather, particularly in July, had a positive impact on Berlin tourism.

The UEFA European Football Championship in June 2024 attracted many visitors from abroad, but it seems that the uncertain prospects of beach holidays may have influenced people to opt for city trips instead.

The decline in overnight stays in Berlin is a problem affecting all German airports, but it's important to note that these fluctuations in international demand may reflect broader trends or specific factors like shifting travel preferences or economic conditions.
