Hopping southward towards sunshine amidst the Whitsun holidays proved a trial of fortitude for numerous vacationers. A monstrous traffic impediment formed in Austria, leaving drivers in a wait-and-see game.

Munich's Unpleasant Surprise

So much for a tranquil Whitsun or an extended weekend escape, as Bavarian and Austrian roadways demanded ample patience from weary travelers. Delayed departures, stationary traffic jams, congested parking spots on the highways - these were the prevailing challenges for motorists headed towards sunny Italia on a critical Austrian transit route.

Traffic Fiasco Begins on A10

On Saturday (7th of June), a traffic standstill occurred on the Tauern motorway (A10) bound southward. Some 45 kilometers of traffic backup ensued, stretching back beyond the Walserberg in Germany, where a similar transportation pandemonium had taken place a few days prior. According to Ö3, these delays stretched vacationers' journeys by up to five hours.

"Multiple hours of traffic jams anticipated on the Tauern motorway this Saturday," a traffic guru from ÖAMTC warned in advance. Regrettably, long travel delays have become a routine occurrence during the Whitsun traffic season, as experts asserted. On Saturday morning, the time loss was already projected at a staggering three hours as early as 7 a.m.

Roadblock Caused by Tunnel Works in Austria

The foundation of travel chaos on Saturday was a tunnel construction site near Golling in the Salzburg district. Several tunnels underwent vital renovation work, affecting these facilities:

  • Ofenauer Tunnel
  • Hiefler Tunnel
  • Werfen tunnel chain (Brentenberg, Zetzenberg, Helbersberg)

"Alternate tunnels are intermittently closed for each direction of traffic. Traffic is navigated through free tubes in a single lane along opposite directions," the ADAC detailed. Tunnel rehabilitation is set to conclude at the end of June 2025, leaving vacationers to brave the worksite throughout the Whitsun holidays. "At least the inconvenient construction site will be finally erased by the end of June, granting summer vacationers the much-needed relief," an ÖAMTC expert chimed in while discussing the extreme traffic on Whitsun Saturday.

In contrast, the traffic snafu may have not come as a shock for travelers. Both ÖAMTC, Asfinag, and the ADAC in Germany had warned of the construction site and the possible congestion. In addition, the last day prior to the two-week break was on Friday in states like Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Plus, the allure of a lengthy weekend was amplified due to Whitsun Monday. Holidays in Berlin, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, and North Rhine-Westphalia would see an added day off school on Tuesday. Munich Airport forecasted record passenger traffic.

Traffic Jam Persists on Whitsun Sunday

Conditions on the road remained less-than-ideal on Sunday (8th of June), with the Salzburger Nachrichten newspaper reporting a 24-kilometer standstill by 9:30 AM. Wait times already surpassed four hours. A reversing travel wave was anticipated starting from Monday onwards.

Pentecost Traffic Saga: Jams in Tyrol too - Blame on Italy

The A10 was not the only route causing frustration for drivers during the Pentecost weekend. There had been extended delays in Tyrol on Saturday as well, affecting regions like Innsbruck, the Fernpass road, and the Brenner motorway heading towards Italy. "A construction site at the border tunnel on the Italian side of the Brenner pass resulted in the transit site only being passable in a single lane from 10 PM to 5:45 AM," stated Asfinag spokesperson Alexander Holzedl to the Tyrolean daily newspaper. The lack of communication by the Italian side regarding this circumstance was evident, according to Tyrolean politician René Zumtobel, who called for better cross-border cooperation.

Truck drivers, pushed by the traffic jam, reportedly exited the motorway onto local country roads, instantaneously obstructing nearby villages. Later, the police guided the trucks back onto the motorway, keeping fines at bay as an additional deterrent to the already congested roads.
