Linzer Landestheater's 2025/26 Season: A Mix of Classics and Contemporary Masterpieces

Get ready for an exciting mix of long-standing favorites and fresh, contemporary productions at the Linzer Landestheater, as they kick off their 2025/26 season under the leadership of Intendant Hermann Schneider and Chief Conductor Markus Poschner.

The acting department is in for a logistical challenge due to renovations on the promenade, but that hasn't stopped them from gathering some intriguing shows for the upcoming season. The focus is on football, with a documentary theater piece about the trial of notorious Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann underway.

The season, marking the tenth under Schneider's leadership, is themed "As old as young," a play on words that will guide the entire theater work. Sure enough, the previous digital program book style has been replaced with a return to the analog, featuring real objects photographed in front of hand-painted backgrounds.

Opera and Musical Highlights

Markus Poschner, who is stepping down in 2027, starts his penultimate season with a personal favorite, "Der Rosenkavalier" by Richard Strauss in October. The comedy for music was last performed in Linz in 2013 and returns with a new production by Hermann Schneider, cast entirely with the theater's own forces. Other opera highlights include Puccini's "Turandot" in January, Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" in May, and Johann Strauss' "Wiener Blut."

The musical season begins with "Shrek – das Musical," directed by Werner Sobotka, followed by "Come from away - Die von woanders" by Irene Sankoff and David Hein and "Wonderful Town" by Leonard Bernstein. For a smaller-scale production, "Die Mitte der Welt" by Niklas Wagner (text) and Sarah Taylor Ellis (music) will premiere in the BlackBox.

Theater Segment

September starts with a twist, as the season kicks off not in the Schauspielhaus, but in the BlackBox of the Musiktheater due to renovations. "The Derby," a play in two halves and extra time by artistic director David Boesch, will present a reflective take on modern football. Peter Wittenberg will stage the documentary theater piece "Eichmann on Trial", based on the original trial records, at the Landesgericht Linz.

Upcoming premieres include "Measure for Measure" by William Shakespeare, "Eurotrash" by Christian Kracht, Susanne Lietzow's reinterpretation of "The Beggar's Opera," and the stage production of "Fucking old - Old Love" by Winzer & Winzer, among others.

Stay tuned for updates though, as the complete program for the 2025/26 season, including details on productions like "Shakespeare's Dream," is yet to be announced. We recommend following the theater’s website or Instagram (@landestheaterlinz) for the latest news!
