Enduring Athlete Ben Gallagher, a predecessor in Special Forces, is embarking on an arduous journey of rowing and hiking more than 100 kilometers within a span of 72 hours for charity Love Rowing.
Ben Gallagher, a former Special Forces soldier and Invictus Games athlete, is embarking on a 100km rowing and hiking challenge from 22nd to 24th September, aiming to raise funds for the charity, Love Rowing. This ambitious endeavour, known as The Big Row Challenge - The Big Row Hike, involves rowing and hiking across three large lakes and the nearest tallest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales.
Established in 2018 as the British Rowing's Charitable Foundation, Love Rowing has since provided support to 78 projects, benefiting over 12,000 individuals. The charity is dedicated to tackling underrepresentation in rowing and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to access the sport.
The challenge kicks off in the Highlands of Scotland, with Ben rowing half of Loch Ness from Fort Augustus. He will then hike Meall Fuar-mhonaidh, a 13.64km hike with an elevation of 699m, before rowing the full length of Loch Ness (36.3km).
On the second day, Ben will row 18.08km on Lake Windermere, run through Ambleside, and hike the Fairfield Horseshoe (16.14km hike with an elevation of 873m). The final day will see Ben rowing 6km across Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), summiting Aran Fawddwy (18.8km hike with an elevation of 906m), and rowing back across Llyn Tegid before sunset.
Individuals or groups can participate in The Big Row Hike Row by matching one or all three of Ben’s legs. They can choose from indoor rowing, water-based rowing, hiking, walking, running, or even combine them. The goal is to test endurance, resilience, and determination while raising awareness and money for Love Rowing’s mission to make rowing accessible to all.
The Big Row series is supported by British Rowing, Scottish Rowing, and Welsh Rowing. Clubs affiliated with these organisations can apply for up to 50% of funds raised to support their own inclusive rowing projects. This includes supporting clubs, state schools, and community organizations, allowing them to open their doors to disabled people, young people who face significant financial disadvantage, and ethnically diverse communities.
Previous events organised by Love Rowing have included virtual rows with hundreds of people contributing the distance around the circumference of the World, London to Tokyo and back, and from Paris to LA.
