Erdoğan-Trump Meeting: Boeing Deal, but Key Strategic Issues Unresolved

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's meeting with Donald Trump at the White House on September 25 yielded mixed results. While a major deal was struck for Turkish Airlines to purchase 225 aircraft from Boeing, key strategic issues remained unresolved. The opposition sought clarification on the purchase of American Express LNG and its cost compared to Russian gas.

Erdoğan's long-standing request for a meeting with Trump ended with no concrete progress on excluding CAATSA or blocking the sale of US engines for KAAN jets. The Turkish president did not provide details, only mentioning a 'warm reception' and 'impulse for further improvement' of bilateral relations. Prior to the summit, Turkey lifted additional tariffs on US goods in a bid to ingratiate itself with Trump.

The meeting saw a significant energy deal, with Turkey agreeing to purchase American Express LNG for the next 20 years. Volumes are set to reach 5.8 billion cubic meters by 2030 and 70 billion cubic meters by 2046. However, this shift comes with higher costs and logistical challenges for Turkey, signaling a strategic but expensive political loyalty to the US. Erdoğan's negotiation of American Express LNG deliveries despite an existing Russian gas contract was driven by a desire to diversify Turkey's energy sources and reduce dependency on Russia, under US pressure, particularly from Trump. The US president pushed for Turkish detachment from Russian oil and gas.

Despite the lack of progress on key strategic issues, a major deal was struck between Turkish Airlines and Boeing. Turkey's energy landscape will change significantly with the purchase of American Express LNG. However, the higher costs and logistical challenges associated with this shift are clear. The results of Erdoğan's meeting with Trump remain vague, with no concrete progress on key issues such as CAATSA and the F-35 dispute.
