Europe Offers Free Train Trips to 18-29 Year-Olds Across Europe

The European Commission has announced the distribution of 36,000 tickets offering free train travels to young individuals across the continent. The opportunity spans from July 2023 to September 2024, encouraging exploration of Europe's diverse cultures during a month-long journey. Applications close in April for those who will be at least 18 years old by the Journey's start. Applicants from EU countries, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia, or Turkey, are eligible.

Germany has demonstrated the highest interest, with the majority of applications shared by young Germans, followed by Spain and Poland. A total of 6,100 German youth are slated to embark on a complimentary adventure, thanks to the EU's "DiscoverEU" program, which commenced in 2018 and has awarded 391,000 tickets since inception. Other advantages include discounted accommodations and cultural institution access.

Background

The DiscoverEU initiative, part of the Erasmus+ program, offers young adults an experience of cultural exchange and European exploration via train travel. Those 18 years or older are welcome to apply as long as they meet the relevant application periods based on their birth year. For non-EU citizens residing in the EU, specific eligibility criteria may be implemented, so they should consult the official DiscoverEU website for details.

Applications are twice a year, typically during spring and autumn, with submissions done through the European Youth Portal. The application process involves filling out personal information and specifying travel preferences and interests. EU citizens can enjoy additional mobility and cultural benefits to further strengthen European unity.
