The two-hour ferry from Sorong to Waisia port on Waigeo Island sets you back 100,000 IDR ($10/£5), with trips departing daily at 2 PM. On Saturdays, an additional ferry typically commences at 11 AM, while an early 9 AM departure is scheduled for Mondays and Fridays. Keep in mind that your homestay on your chosen island usually picks you up from the port and takes you there for around 80,000 IDR ($8/£4) pp each way.
Prepare yourself for some slight sticker shock, as getting to Raja Ampat may involve a few slightly more expensive flights. The fabulous scuba diving experiences scattered across Indonesia often involve flying to off-the-beat destinations like Raja Ampat, Wakatobi, or the Gili Islands.
Travel tip: Book your flights well in advance, and be prepared for a little extra time to account for delays at both the airport and ferry pier. You might end up spending a night in Sorong, but trust me, it's a small price to pay for paradise!

Wayag, the famous "view" of countless green-covered rocks emerging from the water, was slightly out of reach for us, but it's a must-see for future visits. Unfortunately, fuel costs make it quite pricey, so budget around 2 million IDR ($200/£100) for the experience.
Diving and Snorkeling
Diving in Raja Ampat is an unforgettable experience, with world-renowned dive sites like Cape Kri boasting an impressive array of marine life. Expect to pay 350,000 IDR ($35/£18) per dive with your own equipment, with an additional 100,000 IDR if you need to rent gear.
For snorkel enthusiasts, the house reef off the pier at our homestay offers a fantastic opportunity to view schools of fish, turtles, and reef sharks. It's even better than much of the diving I've experienced!
Word of caution: Be aware that the currents here can be intense! Make sure you're prepared for strong underwater currents, and consider getting some current experience or practicing with a reef hook before diving into these waters.
More Tips and Tricks
- Buying the Raja Ampat Marine Park Conservation Tag is mandatory whether you arrive at the port or hotel opposite the airport. As of mid-2025, the park fee is 700,000 IDR ($43) for independent travelers, along with a small Raja Ampat Visitor Entry Ticket charge.
