Exploring Raja Ampat, Indonesia on a Limited Budget

Title: Affordable Adventures in Raja Ampat, Indonesia on a Shoestring Budget

Heading to Raja Ampat, Indonesia? Hold onto your flip-flops, mate! This remote, tropical paradise, with its crystalline waters and otherworldly landscapes, might leave you feeling like you've sailed right into a dream. But fret not, solo travelers or backpackers, there's still hope for exploring this oasis on a tight budget.

I stumbled upon Raja Ampat myself, and after some grit and planning, I managed to snag this slice of heaven without breaking the bank. So buckle up, because I'm about to spill the tea on how to experience Raja Ampat 'on a budget' for under £300! That's a week in paradise, without diving, and if you're already in Indonesia, it won't drain your savings.

Just a heads up — I've updated this guide to reflect the changes that have occurred since my visit in 20XX (you know, before the whole pandemic gig). So let's dive into the updated details and tips!

Getting There

To reach Raja Ampat, you gotta pass through Sorong in West Papua first. Makassar and Manado airports provide direct connections to Sorong from Bali, Jakarta, or Singapore. Manage your travel time effectively, as flights can be a tad unreliable, and transportation from Sorong to the islands may require some flexibility.

The two-hour ferry from Sorong to Waisia port on Waigeo Island sets you back 100,000 IDR ($10/£5), with trips departing daily at 2 PM. On Saturdays, an additional ferry typically commences at 11 AM, while an early 9 AM departure is scheduled for Mondays and Fridays. Keep in mind that your homestay on your chosen island usually picks you up from the port and takes you there for around 80,000 IDR ($8/£4) pp each way.

Prepare yourself for some slight sticker shock, as getting to Raja Ampat may involve a few slightly more expensive flights. The fabulous scuba diving experiences scattered across Indonesia often involve flying to off-the-beat destinations like Raja Ampat, Wakatobi, or the Gili Islands.

Travel tip: Book your flights well in advance, and be prepared for a little extra time to account for delays at both the airport and ferry pier. You might end up spending a night in Sorong, but trust me, it's a small price to pay for paradise!

Accommodation

The best accommodation options in Raja Ampat are homestays on the various islands. These range from luxury eco-resorts to more budget-friendly huts. I highly recommend Yenkoranu Dive Resort on Kri Island, where we managed to snag a private hut for just 1 million IDR ($100/£50) per night, with three meals included. For the budget-friendly duo, you can find basic shared huts for as little as 200,000 IDR each ($20/£10) per night. For more options and advice on finding accommodation, don't forget to check out www.stayrajaampat.com.

Internet and phone signal are limited in Raja Ampat, so don't be surprised if the initial confirmation isn't instant. It's all part of the rugged charm, I assure you!

Food and Other Expenses

Food is included in your accommodation rate, so it's nearly impossible to exceed your planned budget. A large tin of Bintang beer costs around 50,000 IDR ($5/£2.50) on the island, which may be served a tad warm due to the intermittent power supply. To save a few bucks, feel free to bring some brewskis from Sorong!

Trips and Activities

The cost of island-hopping depends on where you choose to stay. Each adventure offers unique experiences, so expect additional expenses depending on your itinerary. For instance, our Fam Island excursion, which took us to breathtaking views, snorkeling sites, and more, cost around 1 million IDR ($100/£50) per person — a bargain, if you ask me!

Wayag, the famous "view" of countless green-covered rocks emerging from the water, was slightly out of reach for us, but it's a must-see for future visits. Unfortunately, fuel costs make it quite pricey, so budget around 2 million IDR ($200/£100) for the experience.

Diving and Snorkeling

Diving in Raja Ampat is an unforgettable experience, with world-renowned dive sites like Cape Kri boasting an impressive array of marine life. Expect to pay 350,000 IDR ($35/£18) per dive with your own equipment, with an additional 100,000 IDR if you need to rent gear.

For snorkel enthusiasts, the house reef off the pier at our homestay offers a fantastic opportunity to view schools of fish, turtles, and reef sharks. It's even better than much of the diving I've experienced!

Word of caution: Be aware that the currents here can be intense! Make sure you're prepared for strong underwater currents, and consider getting some current experience or practicing with a reef hook before diving into these waters.

More Tips and Tricks

  • Buying the Raja Ampat Marine Park Conservation Tag is mandatory whether you arrive at the port or hotel opposite the airport. As of mid-2025, the park fee is 700,000 IDR ($43) for independent travelers, along with a small Raja Ampat Visitor Entry Ticket charge.
  • Consider taking the Pelino ferry as a more affordable way to travel between the larger islands. Keep in mind that the schedule is rather irregular, with boats leaving approximately once every few weeks. Visit www.pelni.co.id for timetables and bookings.
  • Don't fear the occasional power outages on the smaller islands. Embrace the opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and enjoy the peacefulness of nature.

Raja Ampat: Where dreams come to life, and pockets may take a hit, but nonetheless, it's worth every penny. Safe travels and happy ocean adventures!
