Frightening Ryanair Flight Turbulence Incident Leaves Nine Injured
By the B.Z. Editorial Team
Passengers of a Ryanair flight from Berlin to Milan-Malpensa endured a harrowing experience on Wednesday evening as they encountered extreme turbulence over Bavaria. The plane, presumably battling a ferocious storm, sent some passengers flying against the cabin ceiling!
Upon the incident, the aircraft was forced to make an unprecedented landing in Memmingen (Bavaria). A passenger shared with BILD, "I've never known fear before - but in that moment, I thought the plane was going to disintegrate or crash!" Reports also indicated the plane leaning heavily to the left.
Images from the cabin, obtained by BILD, depict dislodged ceiling panels and passengers looking utterly stunned.
Turbulence Concerns:According to Ryanair passengers, the continuous fasten seatbelt sign failed to be lit continuously, potentially leaving some passengers unsecured during the aircraft's violent shaking.
Following the emergency landing, passengers waited prolonged hours within the plane, fostering an atmosphere laden with tension, uncertainty, and agitation. Nine people were injured during the ordeal, including a crew member. Three of the injured - a two-year-old child with bruises, a woman with a head wound, and another passenger complaints of back pain - required hospitalization.
Since the Southern Bavaria Air Traffic Control refused further flight approval, the airline has arranged for buses for the onward journey, according to DPA.
Initially, there was much uncertainty as to what would transpire next, and whether it would be feasible to continue with the same plane and pilots. Many passengers who contacted BILD are now grappling with the question, "Do I really want to board that plane again?"
Weather Service Confirmations
The weather service Kachelmannwetter released images showing a thunderstorm atmosphere between Ulm and Memmingen at the same time. Flight data from Flightradar24 also demonstrates the sudden change in the plane's course towards Memmingen.
As of this moment, Ryanair has yet to issue a statement. On their website, the airline had earlier warned about possible disruptions to and from Germany due to storms[1][3][4].
