Beachin' It Up at Étretat's Cliffs: The Allure That's as Dangerous as It Is Beautiful

Frequently visited location by tourists for taking selfies

Slap on the sunscreen, grab your selfie stick, and get ready for a photo opp of a lifetime at Étretat's famous chalk cliffs in Normandy! But hold on cowboy, it ain't all fun and games. These breathtaking, Instagram-worthy cliffs draw millions of tourists each year, but their fragile nature and the risks they pose have forced authorities to take action.

On the social media account of every adventurous thrillseeker, Étretat’s cliffs have made their mark as the ultimate backdrop for pictures that would make any stranger double-tap. And let's face it, many daredevils have gone to extreme lengths, putting themselves in harm's way, just to capture that pic-perfect moment. But no more! The authorities are putting their foot down and taking much-needed steps to ensure the safety of the thousands that flock to this stunning location each year.

With coastal erosion wreaking havoc on the cliffs, authorities are imposing stringent measures post-haste to safeguard the lives of tourists. According to the town of Étretat's order, these new rules are necessary to prevent tragic accidents caused by frequent rockfalls.

Scene of the Crime

The accessibility of these jaw-dropping cliffs, which loom up to approximately 90 meters high, has left many vulnerable to tragedy. With the allure of climbing over barriers or braving the cliff edges for that perfect selfie, there have been way too many fatal accidents. Just like that, life's a beach... and now death too.

Now, visitors can only approach the edge of the cliffs up to five meters. And forget about waltzing through the iconic rock formations at the base, because that's a no-go zone! The beaches themselves are also taking a backseat, with the exception of a small stretch adjacent to the promenade in Étretat. In addition, three popular rock formations have been outright off-limits to the public.

Trespassers Won't Be Tolerated

Remember, ignoring the rules won't get you off the hook! Yes, you may think you're just living your best life, but those caught flouting the access restrictions face fines from 35 euros and up. Fire department rescue operations will also come at an extra cost if you find yourself in need of a helping hand (or rope).

The fire department had already warned in 2022 about the perils lurking just beyond that picturesque landscape. Selfie-sharking and rock-climbing deaths have soared as people get more and more wild in their pursuit of the perfect pic.

So put away that phone and take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty that Étretat's cliffs have to offer - safely, of course!
