Germans Steer Clear of U.S.A. for Travel Choices Based on Trivago Data - Germans Prefer to Stay Away from the United States as a Travel Option

Germans Shun the United States as a Travel Destination, Trivago Data Shows

In an exclusive revelation, hotel booking platform Trivago has reported a significant decrease in German interest for travel to the USA. According to Trivago CEO Johannes Thomas, this downward trend is evident across various international travelers; not just Germans.

Thomas asserted that the number of Germans traveling to the USA has dropped by a "double-digit percentage." Similar trends are observable among Canadian and Mexican travelers, he added. Additionally, US citizens themselves seem to be favoring domestic travel over international trips.

This decline in international travel to the USA can be attributed to several factors, with the US entry policy being a major concern since the beginning of Donald Trump's second term. In recent months, numerous German citizens have been detained upon arrival in the USA. This has prompted the Federal Foreign Office to update its travel advice for the United States, advising travelers that final entry decisions rest with border authorities, regardless of a valid visa.

Despite the negative impact on the US market, Trivago is thriving. Thomas notes that demand for travel remains high, with the company's revenue increasing by 22% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year. The company now anticipates double-digit revenue growth for the entirety of 2025.

The Düsseldorf-based company, which compares hotel offers from hundreds of booking sites, has shown signs of recovery since 2024, following changes in leadership. Thomas expressed optimism over the company's performance, stating that they have surpassed expectations and seen good demand since the shift in leadership.

While the aforementioned figures from Trivago indicate growing uncertainty, they also reflect broader trends in the travel industry. Travelers are increasingly opting for domestic trips or closer destinations due to cost considerations and logistical complications. The desire for value and cost savings is a global phenomenon, with many travelers choosing affordable accommodations and budget-friendly destinations.

In summary, Trivago's data reveals a significant decrease in German interest for travel to the USA due to various interconnected factors, predominantly related to economic conditions and global trade tensions. These factors include trade tariffs, economic uncertainty, a shift towards domestic and alternative destinations, and the growing trend of cost-conscious travel. However, despite these challenges, the travel industry itself remains robust, with companies like Trivago showing signs of recovery and continued growth.

  1. Changes in community and employment policies, such as the US entry policy, may have a significant impact on travel decisions, as observed by the drop in German interest for travel to the USA, which can also be observed among Canadian and Mexican travelers.
  2. As lifestyle preferences shift towards cost savings, many travelers are opting for domestic trips or more affordable accommodations and destinations, which aligns with the growing trend of budget-friendly travel, mirroring the observations made by Trivago on the decline in international travel to the USA.
