Germany's CPC Center Launches to Boost Circular Battery Production
The 'Center for Circular Production of Next Batteries and Fuel Cells' (CPC) had its official launch on August 18, 2023. This state-of-the-art research facility, set to be completed by the end of 2027, will focus on circular production and recycling processes for batteries and fuel cells. With a total budget of up to 73 million euros, the CPC is expected to significantly contribute to Germany's HighTech Agenda by 2035.
The CPC, to be built on a 3,700 square meter area, will house around 150 scholars. It aims to integrate recycling and resynthesis processes into the production of new generations of batteries and energy converters. A key focus is the recovery of critical raw materials and their processing into high-purity active materials. The estimated cost for the research building is around 73 million euros, with 65 million euros coming from state and federal governments.
The construction of the CPC is financially supported by the state of Niedersachsen, which has allocated a total of 147.5 million euros for various scientific projects including this center. The CPC is part of the regional network 'Braunschweig LabFactories for Batteries and more' (BLB+) and will strengthen the regional network's development. It is expected to be a significant addition to the battery and fuel cell research ecosystem in Brunswick and Lower Saxony.
The CPC, expected to contribute to Germany's HighTech Agenda by 2035, will focus on competitive battery production and the circular economy. With its completion planned for the end of 2027, this innovative research center is set to drive advancements in sustainable energy production and storage.
