Global COVID-19 Update: Complimentary masks distributed in the U.S. via mail, while COVID passports implemented in Sweden and Denmark
The global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic continues, with various developments taking place across the world.
In the United States, President Biden has called for the continuation of the project to distribute free masks, despite logistical issues being raised by experts. The administration is considering sending free masks to every American home by mail, in an effort to encourage even the most stubborn violators to wear protective gear. President Biden had previously urged all Americans to wear masks for the first 100 days of his term.
Meanwhile, in Sweden, the government and relevant health authorities are planning to develop digital certificates for COVID-19 vaccination to facilitate travel. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has also emphasised the need for common standards for the EU and eventually a global system for these digital certificates. Sweden aims to test these certificates for travel within the country by summer. neighbouring Denmark has already launched its 'digital coronavirus passports' program.
The situation in Peru is particularly concerning, as the second wave of COVID-19 is more aggressive than the first. In just four weeks, Peru has as many infected as they did in the first two months of the pandemic. Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti has announced that a new strain of coronavirus, previously identified in travelers from Brazil, has been detected in the country.
Vaccine developments are also progressing. In the UK, around 4,000 variants of the coronavirus have been identified. To combat this, vaccine manufacturers are aiming for their vaccines to be effective against any strains of COVID-19. A combined vaccine from AstraZeneca and Pfizer is now being tested in the UK.
In an effort to curb the spread of the virus, Dubai has closed clubs and shopping centers. However, this fact was previously reported.
As the world continues to grapple with the pandemic, it's clear that collaboration and innovation will be key to overcoming the challenges ahead.
