Honduras Pledges Reforestation, but Needs Holistic Climate Plan
Honduras, facing severe climate change impacts, has pledged to reforest one million hectares by 2020 in exchange for US$314 million. However, its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent by 2030 under the Paris Agreement is conditional on favorable international funding. The country's agricultural sector, employing 40 percent of its labor force, is already feeling the pinch, with maize and bean harvests projected to decrease significantly by 2050.
The Honduran government lacks a comprehensive strategy to tackle climate change, relying heavily on international donors for support. A bark beetle outbreak in 2013, exacerbated by hotter climate, destroyed a quarter of the country's forests. Water scarcity, with 90 percent of the water supply coming from polluted and drought-affected surface water, is another major threat. Climate change is also impacting coffee production, which has already reduced by almost 25 percent due to changing weather patterns, leading to land degradation and deforestation.
Despite contributing only 0.1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, Honduras is highly vulnerable to climate change. The Environment Minister Schneider is currently responsible for comprehensive and efficient climate protection and adaptation policy. However, government inaction on climate change could exacerbate existing development issues such as inequality, violence, and low education levels.
Honduras' commitment to reforestation and emission reduction is a step in the right direction, but it needs a holistic strategy and consistent government action to address the pressing climate change challenges it faces. The country's heavy reliance on agriculture, coupled with its low contribution to global emissions, underscores the urgent need for international support and cooperation.
