In 2024, German travelers embarked on a record-breaking journey, with a total of 277 million overnight stays on private and business trips abroad. This marked a significant increase compared to previous years, since records began in 2012.

The top five most frequently visited overseas destinations by German travelers remained consistent for the past ten years, albeit in varying order. France and the Netherlands were among the favourites, accounting for eight percent and seven percent of all overseas trips respectively. Other popular destinations included Italy, Austria, and Spain.

The car was the preferred mode of transport for the majority of overnight stays, while the train and airplane followed closely. For multi-day trips, the train was used for 19 percent, and the airplane for 17 percent. Buses and other means of transport made up a small percentage of overnight stays.

The number of domestic trips in 2024 also saw an increase, surpassing the previous year's figure and slightly exceeding the value of 2019. The rise in overseas trips was even more substantial, with a twelve percent increase compared to 2023 and a fifteen percent increase compared to 2019, amounting to 114 million trips abroad.

Business trips in 2024 saw an eight percent increase compared to the previous year, but still remained ten percent below the value of 2019. Leisure travel, including vacations and cultural tourism, remained a significant driver of overseas travel in 2024.

The increase in German overseas travel in 2024 can be attributed to improving economic conditions post-pandemic, increased disposable income, easing of travel restrictions, and a desire for international experiences. Germany's strong economic growth and employment supported more travel budgets for international trips.

The travel industry in Germany witnessed solid performances both domestically and internationally in 2024, contributing significantly to the national economy (€484 billion) and supporting millions of jobs. Sustainability and policy support are key factors in shaping future travel trends.

While specific destination rankings for German outbound travel in 2024 are not detailed, traditional tourist hotspots within Europe and globally are expected to remain popular. These include European countries such as Spain, Italy, and Austria, as well as other favourite spots worldwide for culture and leisure.

In summary, the boom in German overseas travel in 2024 was driven by economic recovery, greater spending capability, and diverse travel motivations including leisure, business, and cultural exploration. The travel industry in Germany continues to thrive, contributing significantly to the national economy and supporting millions of jobs.

The record-breaking journey of German travelers in 2024, featuring 114 million trips abroad, was primarily driven by leisure lifestyle choices for vacations and cultural tourism. Despite the top five overseas destinations remaining consistent for ten years, traditional tourist hotspots like Spain, Italy, and Austria, as well as other favorite leisure spots worldwide, are expected to remain popular in the future.
