Empowering the Next Generation of Sustainable Entrepreneurs: Uganda's Green Colleges

In Uganda, a unique initiative called the Green Colleges is making a significant impact on the lives of young people and the environment. Established by Welthungerhilfe and local partners, these training centres focus on equipping individuals with sustainable skills and knowledge, promoting environmental protection, climate action, and economic empowerment.

The training programme covers a diverse range of professions, including vegetable cultivation, solar technology, juice processing, mobile phone repair, beekeeping, fish farming, basket weaving, and tourism. By learning these skills, the trainees, known as "ecopreneurs", have the opportunity to present their products and skills to potential customers and employers during the campaign.

Many young people in Uganda are unemployed due to the inability to afford school fees, preventing them from obtaining necessary qualifications for apprenticeships. The Green Colleges aim to bridge this gap by providing practical training, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Upon graduation, trainees receive a start-up package for their own businesses, including seeds and advertising tools. This support helps them launch their ventures and contribute to a sustainable economy. The goal is for these ecopreneurs to have better chances of finding jobs or setting up their own businesses.

The Green Colleges' mission is to produce a new, more environmentally aware generation that can help preserve resources. In Uganda, developing an agricultural economy that uses resources efficiently and sustainably is the clear answer to the worsening situation. The majority of the population in Uganda, especially those under 25, earn their living in agriculture and depend on natural resources.

Climate change effects are already being felt in Uganda, exacerbated by deforestation, pollution, and overuse of grazing land. The Green Colleges are providing training to 1,000 young people in Bunyangabu, Kabarole, and Fort Portal districts, offering them the skills to combat these issues and build a more sustainable future.

The regional campaign aims to raise awareness of the Green Colleges and sustainable natural resource management. By integrating education, community involvement, and practical skill development, Green Colleges help build climate-resilient agricultural practices and biodiversity-focused ecotourism ventures that foster long-term sustainable development in Uganda. This aligns with global sustainability goals by enhancing local livelihoods, conserving ecosystems, and empowering the next generation of environmental stewards.
