Journey from Airlie Beach to the breathtaking Whitsunday Islands.
Hey there! Let's talk about my latest adventure in Australia.
After a week in this land down under, my family and I journeyed from Cairns to Townsville, with our eyes fixed on Sydney. But before we continued, we made a quick pit stop in Airlie Beach and visited the Whitsunday Islands.
Airlie Beach, while still up north, has a climate close to Cairns and Townsville. The best time to visit is from April to November, as the temperatures hover comfortably between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, and there's no rainy or jellyfish season to worry about. Plus, from June to September, it's whale season, and you might just catch a sight of these magnificent creatures jumping high in the air.
Now, if you find yourself in Airlie Beach around midday, just like my family and I did after a long drive, you might be feeling a bit tired. But fear not! The lagoon at the promenade is perfect for a refreshing swim. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through town along the main street, where you'll find an array of cafes, restaurants, pubs, and little shops to explore. The atmosphere at the beach and promenade is truly magical at sunset, making it the perfect way to end the day.
If you're still up for more adventures in the evening, you'll find like-minded people to party with.
Another attraction in Airlie Beach is the Conway National Park. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to visit, but I've only heard good things about it. The park offers a variety of hiking trails for all fitness levels, and the Honeyeater Lookout supposedly boasts an amazing view of Airlie Beach and the coast.
But let's get to the main event: our tour to the Whitsunday Islands. Almost everyone I've met on this trip has connected Airlie Beach with the Whitsundays, and for good reason. The Whitsunday Islands offer a pure slice of nature and views that you can only dream of.
We booked our day tour through Get Your Guide with Magic Whitsundays, which set us back 113 € per person. We were picked up from our apartment by shuttle and taken directly to the harbor. After a brief introduction and welcome, we boarded the yellow speedboat, our tour guide—whose name I've unfortunately forgotten—a young, hilarious Australian who kept us entertained with stories about the coast during the ride.
Initially, we were supposed to stop for snorkeling on the way to the islands, but the conditions weren't ideal. So, we headed straight to the famous Whitehaven Beach, where part of Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed. Fun fact: the whole beach was closed for six weeks, and in the end, only six seconds of footage were used. Six weeks for six seconds... That's Hollywood for you.
Arriving at the beach, we had plenty of time to swim, relax, and explore. The beach sure lived up to its reputation, with snow-white, fine sand, turquoise water, and the perfect atmosphere. After a while, we were called back for lunch. The tour guides had set up an amazing buffet on the beach, with everything you could desire.
Refueled, we hopped back on the boat and kept our eyes peeled for whales, dolphins, and sea turtles. The chances of spotting these creatures were very high, and we were thrilled to see a few sea turtles along the way. The next stop was on the other side of the island, the famous Hill Inlet Lookout.
The hiking trail to the lookout winds through the bush and offers the chance to spot many lizards or goannas. Once you reach the lookout, you'll be left breathless by the view. The sparkling blue bay with many small islands and sandbanks stretched out before you, surrounded by a larger island covered in lush tropical rainforest. I could hardly believe it. The view was even more stunning than I'd imagined, thanks to the photos I'd seen on Instagram.
After enjoying the breathtaking view, we followed a wooden boardwalk that led to even more stunning vistas. Nature, man, it truly never ceases to amaze me.
On our way back, we stopped at another snorkeling spot that belonged to the Great Barrier Reef. The perfect ending to an already amazing day.
Until our next adventure!
Cheers,Jesko
