Lunar Production Club at Bronx Science Dazzles with Its Customary Theater Production

Entered the school cafeteria for the inaugural Lunar Productions club gathering in September 2024, blind to the mysteries that awaited me. The vibrant designs on the large lion costumes, the harmonious dancers rehearsing new moves to a K-pop tune, all captivated me instantly.

The Lunar Productions club, based at Bronx Science, is a dynamic student organization that showcases the richness of East Asian cultural heritage through performance arts. Established as a significant part of the school's cultural calendar, the club's annual showcases feature five main performance groups: Lion Dance, Singing, Traditional Dance, Modern Dance, and Chinese Yo-yo.

The Lunar Productions club is renowned for its dedication to preserving and promoting cultural traditions, while also providing a platform for students to express creativity through diverse performance styles. The club's performances, a product of intensive practice and teamwork, are a highlight of the school year.

The Lion Dance, a traditional Chinese performance, serves as the grand opening act for the Lunar Productions showcases. In intricate costumes and to the rhythm of drums and cymbals, the dancers mimic a lion's movements, symbolizing good luck and warding off evil spirits. The group practices with actual lion costumes and a large black drum, embodying authentic East Asian festival traditions during rehearsals.

The Singing branch contributes vocal arts to the club's repertoire, performing traditional and contemporary songs that highlight Chinese and broader East Asian cultures. The Traditional Dance group focuses on historical cultural practices from East Asia, invoking classical movements and costumes that represent the cultural legacy and storytelling through dance.

Modern Dance, in contrast, embraces contemporary choreography that melds modern dance techniques with influences from East Asian styles or themes, showcasing the evolving nature of cultural expression among youth. The Chinese Yo-yo performance, a staple of Chinese acrobatics, requires dexterity and practice, adding an element of dexterous spectacle to the club’s shows.

The Modern Dance branch works tirelessly to ensure their moves are synchronized and energized enough for the crowd. The members of the Traditional Dance group are reported to get along well, and preparing for the annual showcase is a bonding experience for them. The Chinese yo-yo performance at the annual Lunar showcase requires extreme precision and teamwork among the members.

Vienna Chen, the vice president of Lunar for the 2024-2025 school year, and many other students consider the Lunar Productions club to be a fundamental part of their identity at Bronx Science. For some, like the author and Ngan, it is a safe space for learning about East Asian cultures, exploring new hobbies, and spending time with friends.

The annual showcase of Lunar Productions club features performances from the Choreo club, Cheer squad, gymnastics team, and Lunar Productions club itself, making it a significant event in the school's cultural calendar. The club's impact extends beyond the school, leaving a lasting impression on its members and the audience alike.
