DS N°8: luxury electric cruiser with a continental twist

Luxury Glider Journey in France - Initial Experience on DS No 8

By Patrick Broich, Geneva

Could the DS N°8 be the perfect match for those seeking a touch of French flair in their electric sedan? Let's dive into this captivating vehicle and find out!

DS Automobiles might not be a household name in the German market, but their products are surely no less than exceptional. The brand sometimes struggles to captivate its audience due to a limited dealer network and low visibility. However, the brand's values are as intriguing as its vehicles. If a Volkswagen ID.7 feels too pedestrian for your taste, the DS N°8 might just be what you're looking for.

Both models boast 400V systems, but the DS N°8 comes with a significantly larger battery, holding up to 97.2 kWh net compared to ID.7's 86 kWh maximum. This battery pack gives the N°8 an impressive WLTP range of 750 kilometers on a full charge.

While test-driving the DS N°8 in the Jura region, where speeds on highways are more modulated, range testing revealed that at 84% State of Charge, there were still 522 kilometers left. That's over 600 kilometers with a fully charged battery!

A Lavish Electrical Excursion

While the charging performance might not be the most advanced, the charging speed is still above average for the premium mid-range segment. But those cozying up in the DS N°8's plush seats will surely find little reason to complain.

From the interior architecture to the ergonomic armchairs and X-format steering wheel, the DS N°8 boasts a distinctive, upscale vibe. Some non-premium elements can be spotted, but the imaginative dashboard decorations, ambient lighting, and floating touchscreen give it an overall designer feel.

The backseat checks out as well, with ample headroom (1.58 meters) and a spacious 2.90-meter wheelbase. Sure, the front seat might be the most comfortable, but passengers in the back will also appreciate the generous space.

A Smooth Ride with a French Accent

Under the hood, the DS N°8 comes with a 245-horsepower electric motor, providing the vehicle with a confident navigational touch. The suspension handles bumps and highway waves effectively. For an even more dynamic driving experience, the DS N°8 is also available with all-wheel drive and two electric motors, bumping the power to 350 and the thrust to 509 Newton meters. The DS N°8 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

Prices for the DS N°8 start at €57,700, but that's only for the entry-level model with a smaller battery. Higher-end versions boast greater power, range, and features. The top-of-the-line variant starts at €75,000.

The DS N°8 is manufactured in southern Italy[5], and the battery cells originate from Stellantis' European supply chain[5]. The French carmaker also produces the battery cells in France. Deliveries begin in September.
