From appearances on carnival floats to visits that left a lasting impression, Rhineland-Palatinate has had its share of encounters with Popes. However, many Catholics in the region have yet to meet a Pope in person. Papal visits to Germany have been rare, and even more so in Rhineland-Palatinate.
It remains to be seen whether this trend will change with Pope Leo XIV, hailing from the USA, who may have connections to US bases in Ramstein and Spangdahlem, as well as Baumholder, within Rhineland-Palatinate. In the 80's, two Popes visited the state.
John Paul II's Journey
The first Pope to set foot on German soil in 198 years was Pope John Paul II, who visited Rhineland-Palatinate in 1980 and 1987.
Cologne: Upon his arrival, John Paul II remarked on the different weather compared to Italy.
Mainz: During his visit in 1980, he met with Cardinal Hermann Volk and Karl Lehmann in Mainz, where he toured the city in his Popemobile.
Speyer: In 1987, John Paul II returned to Rhineland-Palatinate and met with then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Speyer. He also beatified two witnesses of faith during the Nazi era. Approximately 60,000 believers attended the Mass he celebrated in front of the cathedral, with his sermon focusing on the creation of a united Europe.
The visit was described as a "century event" by Bishop Anton Schlembach, who later thanked the Pope for his hospitality in a telegram.
Over Three Decades Without a Visit
Since John Paul II's visit, Rhineland-Palatinate has spent more than three decades without another papal visit. However, other Popes have made visits to Germany. Most notably, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated a mass with a million pilgrims during the World Youth Day in Cologne in 2005, and he spoke in the Bundestag in 2011.
Bernard Schmidt's Houseguest: Pope Francis
Before he became Pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis) spent several months in Boppard on the Rhine in 1985, where he lived with a family named Schmidt as he learned German at the Goethe Institute. During his stay, he worked on a doctoral thesis about the theologian Romano Guardini, which he never completed.
Nephew and Lux visit: A Close Encounter
In recent times, the Pope's life barely touched upon Rhineland-Palatinate. However, the neighboring country of Luxembourg will be hosting the Pope in September 2024, with believers from Germany also making the journey.
Alexander Schweitzer's Audience with the Pope
If the Pope doesn't come to Rhineland-Palatinate, then the region will go to the Pope - at least figuratively. Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer traveled to Rome for a private audience with the Pope in the beginning of the year, fulfilling a long-held wish. Schweitzer, a Catholic and former altar boy, described the meeting as "a day that is personally special for me."
