Over the Whitsun weekend, travel misery struck an essential Austrian transit route for German vacationers, resulting in a massive 45-kilometer traffic jam on the Tauernautobahn (A10) southbound. The gridlock stretched across the German border into Bavaria, according to Austrian radio station Ö3.

The 45-kilometer-long traffic jam originated from a tunnel construction site at Golling in the Salzburger Land. This transportation nightmare ensnared German holidaymakers, costing them approximately five additional hours of travel time.

Not only did the A10 suffer but also highways in Tyrol, including Innsbruck, the Brenner motorway towards Italy, and the Fernpass road endured lengthier delays.

Long Weekend + Holiday Start

As the ADAC predicted, the long Whitsun weekend and the start of holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg inevitably brought about "extreme traffic congestion". The ADAC anticipated similar scenarios on German motorways, federal roads, and in Switzerland and Austria along popular holiday routes, particularly on Whitsun Monday.

Besides tourists, the ADAC mentioned that those yearning for some countryside exploration might also join the fray during ideal weather conditions. The ADAC suggested Pentecost Sunday as the perfect day for car trips during this unfriendly weekend, while it might be possible to navigate motorways and federal roads again on Saturday late afternoon.

However, Tuesday after the long weekend might not be the ideal choice for extended car trips, according to the ADAC. In parts of Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, and North Rhine-Westphalia, the 10th of June is also a holiday, potentially leading to increased traffic from short vacationers returning home.

The Commission has also been consulted on the draft travel and lifestyle plans that include extended car trips, a preference for Pentecust Sunday, and avoidance of Tuesday after the long weekend, given the predicted extreme traffic congestion on motorways in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, especially on Whitsun Monday.

Despite the unprecedented traffic jam of 45 kilometers on the A10 due to construction works, the Commission advocates for a potential reduction in travel misery by suggesting alternative holiday activities such as participation in sports or further exploration of rural landscapes, possibly during the lovely weather conditions.
