Recognition with Goethe Medal for Jailed Artistic Luminaries

In the heart of Germany's foreign cultural policy, the prestigious Goethe Medal was bestowed upon three distinguished individuals in Weimar. The ceremony, a tradition since 1955, was held in 2022 and 2025.

Among the recipients were Osman Kavala from Turkey, Li Yuan from China, and David Van Reybrouck from Belgium. Kavala, a cultural promoter, has been a significant figure in the Turkish arts scene. However, it's worth noting that he is currently imprisoned, following a life sentence in 2022 in an internationally criticized trial, where he was found guilty of attempting a coup in connection with the Gezi protests.

Li Yuan, a linguist and Germanist, has been building bridges between Germany and China, fostering understanding between different cultures. She supports the learning and appreciation of German as a foreign language.

David Van Reybrouck, an author from Belgium, advocates for the renewal of democracy and engages with the colonial past in his work. His contributions to literature and cultural discourse have earned him the Goethe Medal.

The Goethe-Institut President, Gesche Joost, stated that the awardees' work demonstrates a particular social responsibility. She also highlighted the courage demonstrated by the honorees, which she considers increasingly important given the geopolitical challenges and societal upheavals we face today.

Previous recipients of the Goethe Medal include renowned figures such as conductor Daniel Barenboim and British author Ian McEwan. The award is traditionally presented on August 28 in Weimar.

This year's ceremony in 2022 saw the addition of Tali Nates from South Africa to the list of esteemed recipients. The Goethe Medal in Weimar 2022 was awarded to Tali Nates, Osman Kavala, Li Yuan, and David Van Reybrouck in 2025.

The Goethe Medal continues to serve as a beacon of cultural exchange and social responsibility, recognising individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts, literature, and cultural discourse.
