Albufeira Cracks Down on Unruly Tourism

After considering public feedback, the Municipal Assembly of Albufeira has approved a new set of rules on June 6. These regulations, officially published yesterday, are set to go into effect today, with the aim to curb abusive behavior and maintain Albufeira as a family-friendly, multicultural destination.

The notice accompanying the new regulations clarifies that this isn't about enforcing a specific dress code or limiting citizens' freedoms but rather about preventing unacceptable behavior.

Mayor José Carlos Rolo spoke to Lusa about the forthcoming changes, emphasizing the need for a shift in public attitude. He stated, "We're not interested in punishing after the fact; our goal is to prevent these actions from happening." Violators risk fines issued by the Municipal Police or GNR if they fail to comply with the new rules after being warned.

Changing the Tide

Business owners and staff in nightlife establishments are encouraged to help disseminate this information to tourists and visitors before penalties are enforced.

The new regulations aim to preserve Albufeira, which boasts half of the hotel supply in the Faro district, as a desirable and safe tourist destination. The city council feels it's urgent to establish measures to tackle the adoption of antisocial behavior, particularly among those who view Albufeira as a tourist destination135.

Strict Regulations and Fines

The new rules include prohibitions against wearing swimwear outside designated areas, public nudity, and sexually explicit activities. Street drinking in designated zones, excessive noise, public urination, wild camping in unauthorized areas, and spending the night on public roads are also prohibited. Fines for these offenses range from €150 to €1,800.

Once the regulations are officially approved by the Municipal Assembly and published in the Official Gazette, an awareness period will follow before fines are issued24.

These new regulations in Albufeira, Portugal, aim to transform the city into a more family-friendly and multicultural destination by enforcing stricter rules on unruly behavior. The business owners and staff in nightlife establishments are encouraged to help disseminate this information to tourists and visitors before penalties are enforced. With these new rules, Albufeira aspires to maintain its status as a desirable and safe travel destination, offering a variety of news, business, lifestyle, and travel experiences.
