Sochi Airport Experiences Another Delay, Affecting 47 Flights
Sochi Airport is experiencing flight delays for the fourth day in a row, due to ongoing airspace restrictions and disruptions caused by repeated drone attacks in the Krasnodar Krai region.
On August 8 and 9, Russia imposed time restrictions on the arrival and departure of aircraft at Sochi Airport, forcing airlines such as Aeroflot and Rossiya to adjust their schedules or cancel flights. The Russian Defense Ministry reported shooting down multiple drones in the Krasnodar Krai region, leading to emergency protocols for air traffic controllers which have caused prolonged operational disruptions at Sochi Airport.
As a result, dozens of flights have been delayed or cancelled, affecting both domestic and international routes. The destinations of the delayed outbound flights include Chelyabinsk, Samara, Orenburg, Tel Aviv, Tyumen, Nizhny Novgorod, Tashkent, St. Petersburg, Antalya, Pskov, Kazan, Moscow, Istanbul, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Saratov, Hurghada, Nizhnekamsk, Kirensk, Orsk, and Krasnoyarsk. The origins of the delayed inbound flights are Dubai, Yaroslavl, Tbilisi, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Hurghada, Saratov, Moscow, Tel Aviv, Kazan, Pskov, and Nizhnekamsk.
Currently, 17 inbound flights are delayed at Sochi Airport, with 30 outbound flights delayed as well. No new information about the destinations of the delayed outbound flights or the number of delayed flights has been provided.
No recent reports attribute the delays to reasons other than the drone attacks and resulting security restrictions. The airport's press service stated that the terminals were operating normally, with no passenger congestion on August 10.
Meanwhile, the airline Red Wings launched several flights from Yekaterinburg and initiated flights to Gelendzhik from Tatarstan in August. A new airport is planned to be built in Krasnodar Krai by 2027, with an estimated cost of 290 million rubles.
