Holiday Weekend Traffic: Be Aware of Congested Southwest Roads
Southwestern areas will witness an influx of people by the holiday's conclusion. - Southwest streets will be heavily congested by the holiday's end.
On the brighter side of the long weekend ahead, just remember that motorists in Baden-Württemberg had best brace for bumper-to-bumper traffic, especially towards the end of Corpus Christi and Whitsun holidays. ADAC Württemberg predicts congestion on motorways heading north, as vacationers make their way back home. Watch out for traffic jams on Sunday afternoon, according to ADAC expert, Holger Bach.
Corpus Christi itself should remain relatively stress-free, but it's the return journey that's got people staying flexible. Many short vacationers are expected to depart on Wednesday afternoon already, so traffic at that time might be lighter.
ADAC suggestions for smooth sailing: Skip peak hours if you can – use Thursday for your travels or drive between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM on the weekend. The worst jams will likely occur during peak travel periods.
But where exactly will the traffic hotspots be? The A5 (Basel - Karlsruhe - Heidelberg), A6 (Nuremberg - Heilbronn - Mannheim), and the A81 (Singen - Stuttgart - Heilbronn) are among the busiest routes, with the Greater Stuttgart area also being a trouble spot. Construction sites on these routes could add to the congestion. Specifically, take note of sections on the A8 near Pforzheim and an area on the A6 between Walldorf interchange and Wiesloch.
Cross-border headaches could also await on the Tauern, Brenner motorways, and at the Gotthard tunnel in Austria and Switzerland, where Corpus Christi is also celebrated. With summer temperatures already soaring, ADAC advises travelers to stay well-hydrated, take frequent breaks, and never leave children, pets, or belongings in the car during warm weather.
While heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes face restrictions on key holiday dates in Baden-Württemberg, these bans might result in temporary congestion on routes accessible by these vehicles before and after the bans. Overall, expect significant delays and long, slow-moving traffic on the routes mentioned, particularly around the Stuttgart metropolitan area over this holiday weekend.
- In an attempt to navigate the congested roads more efficiently, it might be beneficial for travelers to familiarize themselves with both the community policy and employment policy regarding heavy goods vehicles, as temporary traffic delays could occur on routes accessible by these vehicles in Baden-Württemberg.
- To maintain a stress-free lifestyle during travel, holidaymakers are encouraged to plan their journeys around the peak hours, opting for Thursday or between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM on weekends, and avoid hotspot routes like the A5, A6, and A81, especially sections near Pforzheim and the A6 between Walldorf interchange and Wiesloch.
