Spanned over several years, I served as a flight attendant.
Traveling the world for a decade as a flight attendant has given me plenty of time to learn tips and tricks that make jet-setting smoother and more enjoyable. Here are some of my top tricks I still use to this day!
Adapting to New Time Zones
- Staying awake until bedtime on the day you arrive in a new time zone can help you adjust more easily and get the best sleep possible while overcoming jet lag. Set an alarm to ensure you don't oversleep.
Packing Like a Pro
- Ditching checked luggage and traveling with only a carry-on can save precious time at the airport. Airlines usually allow one carry-on bag and a personal item, like a purse or small backpack. Remember to check the airline's baggage policies before arriving at the airport.
- Investing in a luggage tracker can help find lost baggage more easily, and packing cubes make organizing items a breeze, especially during long trips.
Hotel Hacks
- Placing a shoe in the hotel safe can remind you to empty the safe before checking out, ensuring you don't forget important belongings.
- If you check luggage, it's a good idea to call the hotel ahead and request a room away from the pool or entertainment area to guarantee a better night's sleep.
Navigating Unexpected Challenges
- If you find yourself in a destination where English isn't widely spoken, download a translation app in the local language before landing, so you can use it offline. This trick has been a lifesaver on many occasions.
- A small travel steamer is a must when flying, as many hotel rooms don't have irons. Alternatively, setting the hair dryer on high heat and blowing it close to your clothes, or hanging clothes in the bathroom and running the shower for ten minutes, can help remove wrinkles.
Money Matters
- Contact hotels directly to ask for the best room price. I've been surprised how often this approach worked, and I even got upgraded to a better room category.
By following these tips, you'll be traveling like a seasoned pro in no time! Happy journeys, adventurers!
