Boat with 142 Passengers Stuck in the Baltic Sea near Rügen
Stranded Ferry Carrying 142 Passengers Halted in Rügen Island
Got a sea-tangled mess on your hands? That's the deal for the unfortunate passengers on a ferry between Hiddensee and Rügen. The ship's scheduled trip took an unexpected turn, getting stuck between the Baltic Sea islands, and an initial rescue attempt bit the dust.
A ferry transporting around 140 souls encountered a snag near the shallow waters between Hiddensee and Rügen. The German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS) from Bremen reported that no one was hurt.
These 142 passengers and a quartet of crew members were safe and cozy, thanks to the calm seas. However, their journey took an extra three hours due to the emergent situation.
Rügen: A Sand and Sun Paradise
As per the coast guard, the ferry was cruising from Vitte on Hiddensee to Schaprode on Rügen, skimming the Schaproder Bodden, a shallow lagoon nestled between the two islands that belong to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
What Went Wrong?
Apparently, the culprit behind the maritime mishap was a technical snafu. A busted relay in the ferry's rudder system was the prime suspect, as a spokesperson for the shipping company explained to NDR. This malfunction caused the boat to deviate from the tight fairway into the shallows.
According to the report, the first rescue vessel couldn't budge the 40-meter-long ship back on track. It took a heftier boat to finally tow the boat out. Once freed, the ferry saluted Schaprode under its engine's might.
