Struggling amidst overflow: famous beach resort grappling with tourism surge
Decline in Tourists at Scharbeutz Beach: Coastal Protection Measures and Infrastructure Issues Cited as Main Causes
The usually bustling Baltic Sea resort of Scharbeutz is experiencing a decline in tourists this summer season, much to the concern of lounge chair renters and business owners. The two summer months are crucial for these businesses, but this year, they are facing low reservation numbers and abandoned parking spaces, with lonely standing lounge chairs a common sight at the beach.
A business owner described the midpoint of the season as "catastrophic," while a young employee at a grill stand near the Seebrucke entrance reported that the shooting festival days were quieter than expected. Samira Polchow from a fish roll stand shares a similar observation, but Michael Hein, operator of a fish stand with an additional sales place in front of the festival stage, is satisfied with the visitor turnout.
However, the reasons behind this decline are not just limited to the weather or the shooting festival. The coastal protection measures implemented in Scharbeutz have been cited as a significant factor. Visitors have reported that the newly constructed flood protection wall close to the promenade has altered the beach area, making it less accessible and "shutting some people out" [1][2].
The Ostsee Therme spa, a popular local amenity, has also been a subject of concern. Customer reviews mention poor service, high prices, and limited facilities [3], which could be contributing to the decline in tourist numbers.
A retired couple from Emmerich am Niederrhein, who have come to Scharbeutz specifically for the shooting festival, considered it a "discovery." However, they noted that there were more stands and activities at the pond during earlier years. A visitor from Wuppertal, who has been visiting Scharbeutz annually since he was 13, confirms the impression of less activity despite more than acceptable weather.
Andreas Flagmann and Connie Simonis, who have been running "Die Kleine Backstube" at the annual festival in Scharbeutz for six years, have observed a negative trend in business. Gabriele Alff, renting lounge chairs under the name "Korb-am-Meer" for four decades, attributes the current situation to incorrect weather forecasts and guests' last-minute decisions.
Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to improve the situation. The local authorities are working on addressing the issues with coastal protection measures and infrastructure to make Scharbeutz more appealing to tourists once again.
