Summer literary engagements and amusement have concluded for the year!

Harris County Public Library's Summer Reading Program 2025 a Success

The Harris County Public Library's (HCPL) Summer Reading Program 2025 was a resounding success, with a multitude of engaging events, strong participation, and notable partnerships.

The program, which ran from June to August, offered free activities such as live theater performances, STEM shows, and appearances by Houston Astros' mascot Orbit. These events provided an engaging and educational summer experience for children and families across the county.

Participation was actively encouraged across multiple HCPL branches, with libraries like the Katy and Bear Creek branches sharing photos of participants enjoying the program and announcing deadlines for prize pickups. This robust community involvement throughout the summer indicated a strong commitment to fostering a culture of reading and learning among Harris County residents.

The program included literacy-focused initiatives such as the “Book Buddies” free literacy program, supporting ongoing reading engagement and skill-building beyond the summer months.

HCPL collaborated with community and regional partners, with the Harris County Junior Mounted Posse being a prime example. The youth ambassadorship and performance group played an integral role in the program, extending educational and outreach efforts across the county.

The Harris County Friends of the Library provided steadfast support and enthusiasm for Summer Reading 2025. Another key partner was CYCLE Houston, who partnered with the library to provide a brand new bike and helmet to one lucky kid at each branch library for reaching 300 points in summer reading.

The program was a resounding success, with over 20,000 registered readers of all ages logging more than seven million minutes of reading during the summer. This represented a 49% increase over the 2024 minutes total. An additional 283,900 books were read during Summer Reading 2025.

The Harris County Commissioners Court recognized the Harris County Public Library and the participants of the 2025 Summer Reading Program with a resolution. The resolution commended the library and readers for their outstanding achievement and encouraged all residents to continue fostering a love of reading and lifelong learning throughout the year.

In summary, the 2025 Summer Reading program combined entertaining educational events, prize incentives, and literacy outreach to foster a culture of reading and learning among Harris County residents, supported by active participation and community engagement at multiple branches.
