Capitalize on Culture: Tartu's Year in the Limelight
Survival techniques in Tartu's journey towards becoming Europe's Cultural Capital
Welcome to Tartu, the shining gem of Southern Estonia, proudly claiming the title of European Capital of Culture in 2024! The road to this momentous occasion, with its twists and turns, has been a testament to the city's resilience in the arts of survival.
Although Tallinn took the lead as Estonia's first European Capital of Culture in 2011, Tartu proved to be a formidable contender. Fast forward to the race again, and Tartu didn't hesitate to throw its hat in the ring once more.
"The first attempt gave us an appetite for something extraordinary," shares Kalle Paas, a former communication and marketing division head, and a member of Tartu 2024's candidacy team. The title isn't conferred based on what the city is - it's awarded to what the city aspires to be. And Tartu yearned to be a catalyst for change.
Harnessing the power of collaboration, Tartu invited Southern Estonian municipalities to join forces in their bid to secure this prestigious title. This alliance covered a substantial portion of Estonia, making it more visible on the European stage.
The Tartu City Government kicked off the bid process, engaging key community groups and hosting events and roundtables for constructive discussions. Almost 1,000 individuals, hailing from various walks of life, contributed their ideas to the process.
The bid team crafted 33 projects that would form the heart of the upcoming title year, combining fun, educational, and record-breaking initiatives. One exciting project, Kissing Tartu, was inspired by a chance encounter with a foreign expert, promising an engaging concert performance and a massive kissing session next year.
The Prophetic Art of Survival
Every European Capital of Culture carries a unique theme to guide the creation and communication of its program. For Tartu 2024, it's "The Arts of Survival." The Tartu 2024 artistic director, Kati Torp, felt a deep resonance with this concept, as it aligned with her interests in climate and cultural topics.
At first, the theme embraced the city's concerns about accessibility and dwindling population, as well as the pressing issue of climate change. However, as the pandemic struck, The Arts of Survival took on a new meaning - survival of the arts in the face of adversity, as cultural managers navigated budget cuts, closures, and shifted the artistic process to survive.
Following the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the theme took a poignant turn, highlighting the unwavering spirit of resilience and togetherness that underpins Tartu and Southern Estonia's vision for the future.
Artistic Exploration with a Touch of Wit
The Arts of Survival theme sparked numerous interpretations, from profound reflections on humanity's enduring spirit to playful nods to the absurdity of life. This dynamic spirit is captured in Tartu's vibrant street art scene.
When the European Capitals of Culture jury visited Tartu, street artists were tasked with showcasing the theme through their work. With a touch of irony and playfulness, they added an 'F' before 'arts' in their graffiti, elevating the theme's power and giving it a delightfully subversive twist.
Ready to Unveil: Tartu 2024 Program in Full
With the intense bidding process behind them, Tartu 2024 is now focused on refining the details of the first projects and layering additional components to the program under Kati Torp's artistic direction.
