Waste-Busting and Community Uniting: Repair Cafes Sweep Across Thuringia
Thuringian Repair Workshops Rescue More Than Merely Old East German Mixers
Join the eco-friendly revolution in Thuringia! With a whopping 15 cities embracing the Repair Café trend, neighborly folks are banding together to resuscitate old devices and share some good ol' DDR technology knowledge.
Sip, Snack, and Learn: Unraveling Your Gadgets!
Since 2009, this sustainability movement sparked by a Dutch journalist has enthralled thousands across Europe. Some crafty Jena residents, in a lively networking group, took the lead and quickly established the first Jena Repair Café. More than 300 pioneering individuals packed the Hackspace Jena e.V. to witness its birth in March 2014!

Level Up Your DIY Repair Skills
Oda Beckmann, a member since day one, shares an insightful account:" People arrive at our events with their broken treasures. After a quick registration, you can fill the wait with some java and tasty pastries. Our volunteers and experts get to work, breathing fresh life into the items, be it a torn textile, broken radio, or malfunctioning bike gear!"
Mechanical know-how and social exchange take center stage as you bond with fellow volunteers repairing small or large faults with just a sprinkle of manual dexterity. Keep in mind, though, that a perfect fix isn't guaranteed as it's better to be pleasantly surprised than bitterly disappointed!
Reborn DDR Gems
"Heavier devices have a bit of a hard time here, as opening them up can lead to a mess. However, classic electronic devices require less surgical precision," explains Oda Beckmann. She frequently encounters a tried-and-true remnant from Thuringia's past - the iconic RG28 by AKA electric, a hand-crank and mixer manufactured in Suhl during the '80s.
The secret to its longevity? Slotted screws that can be easily turned and sometimes merely require a gentle shake-up to get them moving again. Unfortunately, replacement parts for the sturdy plastic gears are rare, and 3D-printed copies lack the resilience necessary to be a worthy replacement.
The Art of Precise yet Low-Voltage Repair
The Ilmenau Repair Hub echoes Jena's DIY ethos, focusing on rejuvenating household appliances, smartphones, laptops, and electric tools (e.g., drills). But remember, high-voltage items such as ovens, washing machines, or dishwashers are off-limits.
Thuringia's Vibrant Repair Café Scene
"Everyone contributes according to their skills, and it often turns into a group effort! Our mission is to repair devices together with their owners, emphasizing the importance of ‘self-help,’" explains Carsten Gatermann from Engineers Without Borders e.V., a central figure behind the Ilmenau Repair Hub's success.
In southern Thuringia, another initiative rose in 2023. Young Jan Kellner, an avid tech enthusiast, fosters social impact by inviting fellow repairers for a weekly gathering at the Max Inn Youth Center (basement, Marienstraße 6, Meiningen). He's on the hunt for younger participants to cultivate the wisdom of the older generation.
The Rise of 3D-Printed Repair Parts
Kabel & Faden - Repair Café Weimar e.V. entered Thuringia's repair scene in 2024. With around 20 active volunteers, they offer help repairing small hand-carryable household appliances and textiles. 3D printers' capabilities might expand to produce parts for repairs or even host educational workshops on repair techniques.
Repair Cafés: Bringing Thuringia Together
Repair Cafés epitomize community bonding and knowledge sharing across the region. "We pride ourselves on fixing things and sharing the knowledge needed to do so," asserts Stefan Doose, the chairman of Kabel & Faden. "Guests are greeted with tasty treats and drinks, ensuring they feel comfortable and appreciated while they wait for their devices to be revamped." The group relies on donations to keep up the good work.
Join the movement and reaffirm the spirit of human connection, sustainability, and resourcefulness that lies at the heart of Repair Cafés! Save technology, foster community, and make a meaningful impact on the world, one repair at a time. 🌍🔧💚🛠️🌱
