🗓️ When's the best time to dive and snorkel in St. Maarten?
St. Maarten enjoys sunny, warm weather and clear waters year-round, making it an ideal destination for sailors of all stripes. However, November through May is arguably the best time for divers, as it offers the chance to swim with whales and sharks, making for unforgettable experiences.
June and July remain wonderful months for visibility, but the heat may prove too much for some. If you're visiting from June through November, be sure to check weather forecasts, as this is the Caribbean hurricane season, meaning waters could become choppier than usual. 🏊♂️ Dive Sites: Golden Gems Await!
Without further ado, let's take the plunge and explore five of St. Maarten's standout dive sites!
1️⃣ The Fishbowl 🐠
The Fishbowl is a must-visit for divers of all skill levels. Located within Man of War Shoal Marine Park, this large circular reef boasts an average depth of 60 feet (18 meters) and exceptional visibility over 100 feet (30 meters). The Fishbowl lives up to its name with a staggering array of marine life, including honeycomb trunkfish, scrawled filefish, and spiny lobster. Keep your eyes peeled for larger inhabitants like reef sharks and barracuda swimming around.
You'll also find two enormous coral arches here, another unique attraction of The Fishbowl. Easy to reach, this destination is a fantastic choice for sustainable tourism (read Our Ocean Promise for more details).
2️⃣ Big Momma 🦈
Big Momma is an underwater spectacle created by nature herself. This expansive sandy plane, surrounded by towering coral reefs, presents a captivating landscape for shark diving. Intermediate and advanced divers can experience the thrill of diving alongside numerous Caribbean reef sharks, while guided excursions make it accessible for beginners as well.
Alongside the sharks, you may spot other large residents like grouper, barracuda, squirrelfish, and abundant shrimp hiding in the elkhorn coral.
3️⃣ Proselyte Reef 🏹
Looking for a glimpse into the island's historical past under the sea? Proselyte Reef is the dive site for you! This artificial reef covers the remains of the HMS Proselyte, a Dutch frigate from the 18th century. Lying starboard side in 50 feet (15 meters) of water, the ship is now completely encrusted in hard coral.
Among the wreckage, you may find a range of fascinating artifacts, including giant anchors, barrel hoops, cannons, and cannonballs. This wreck dive site also plays host to numerous fish species like triggerfish, crabs, conches, stingrays, barracudas, green sea turtles, and hawksbill turtles.
4️⃣ Dawn Beach 🏖️
On the off chance you decide to leave your snorkel gear behind, Dawn Beach offers a picturesque stretch of pristine white sand and cerulean waters. Swimming out opposite the Westin Hotel will bring you face to face with a vibrant coral reef, perfect for intermediate and advanced swimmers.
In this schoolyard of the sea, you'll find Caribbean reef squid, parrotfish, goatfish, and snappers. Due to its location on the eastern side of the island, Dawn Beach isn't well-suited for snorkeling during periods of strong trade winds or large swells.
5️⃣ Friar's Bay Beach 🌊
Last but certainly not least on our dive site tour is Friar's Bay Beach. Offering a variety of challenging wreck dives and easy-going reef experiences, Friar's Bay is a delight for scuba divers of all levels.
We'll take a moment to highlight the charming reef at Friar's Bay. Accessible to both snorkelers and divers, this shallow reef features coral-encrusted rocks along the coastline. It's a haven for marine life, with barracuda, arrow crabs, coral shrimps, and sea anemones all making appearances.
Friar Bay Beach also offers stunning views of Anguilla and a range of excellent cafes and bars for a post-dive relaxation session.
