Tourism in Zadar Shows Encouraging Growth Patterns
Zadar County's Tourism Thriving in 2025
Zadar County, a cultural and historic gem on Croatia's Adriatic coast, is experiencing steady growth in its tourism sector. According to recent reports, the county recorded around 3.3 million tourist arrivals in the first half of 2025, marking a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2024[1]. Overnight stays in the region also saw a 4% rise[1].
These positive trends are a testament to Zadar's growing appeal as a tourist destination. Croatia's tourism minister, Tonči Glavina, highlighted the sector's overall positive indicators, including increased arrivals, overnight stays, and an 11% improvement in air traffic by mid-2025[1]. This growth reflects Zadar’s growing appeal as part of Croatia’s broader tourism strategy.
Zadar's rich cultural heritage is a significant draw for visitors. The city is recognized as an entertainment and cultural center of the Adriatic, enriched by its historic heritage such as Roman and Venetian defenses. Its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site also adds to its allure[3].
Improved transport accessibility is another factor contributing to Zadar's tourism growth. The city benefits from well-developed infrastructure, including a modern port and an airport with connections across Europe. It is linked to the capital Zagreb by a scenic, high-quality highway, facilitating visitor access[4].
Despite the growth, Zadar remains comparatively less crowded than some other Dalmatian destinations. Its combination of historical sites and natural beauty, along with a comparatively lower price point, makes it an attractive option for visitors seeking a less crowded experience[4].
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković addressed the need to increase the share of hotel capacity and encourage further reforms to raise the quality of Croatian tourism. He emphasized the exceptional contribution of tourism to the Croatian economy and GDP growth[2].
Robertino Dujela, Deputy County Prefect of Zadar, was present at the meeting and reported on the county's tourism results. Over a million tourists have visited the county so far in 2025, achieving 6.2 million overnight stays[5]. He also announced the arrival of 105 cruise ships in Zadar Port Authority's ports, bringing approximately 275,000 passengers[5].
Despite the success, there are still challenges to address. At least a quarter of private rentals are still not declaring as required by law, despite stricter rules and the eVisitor system[6]. Dujela appealed to landlords who rent properties to tourists in Zadar County to properly register their guests to gain accurate insights into tourist traffic and avoid the "grey" market.
The achieved results show that Zadar County's tourism is continuing strongly throughout the year with positive trends, further confirming its desirability as a destination on the Adriatic. As of July 26th, 2025, 9.65 million arrivals and 42 million overnight stays have been achieved in Croatia, representing a 2% increase compared to the same period last year[7]. Germany, Slovenia, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia are all experiencing increases in overnight stays, with Germany recording a +3% increase[7].
As the tourism industry continues to flourish in Croatia, Zadar County remains a key player, offering a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and a comparatively lower price point. The county's continued growth and success are set to make it a must-visit destination for years to come.
