Heavy Traffic Expected During Ascension Day Weekend, Especially in Northern Germany

Travelers planning trips during the extended Ascension Day weekend are urged to either allow extra travel time or consider off-peak hours, following a warning from the Automobile Club General Germany (ADAC). Roads in the northern regions, particularly around Hamburg, are predicted to experience heavy congestion due to additional restrictions and construction works.

The ADAC has highlighted several potential traffic hotspots, including the A7's Elbtunnel and ongoing construction on the Norderelbbridge on the A1 near Hamburg. Additionally, a construction site on the A23 southbound is causing concerns for drivers, particularly those returning from the North Frisian Islands. Seasonal traffic congestion is also expected on coastal roads and crossings leading to the islands in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein.

On Wednesday afternoon, delays are anticipated as regular commuters intermingle with holiday travelers, affecting all highways leading towards the coast. Similarly, roads will be busier on Sunday as people begin their journeys home.

To minimize delays, the ADAC advises travelers to plan trips either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak hours, which are expected to be between 3 PM and 7 PM on Ascension Day itself. Additionally, using navigation apps to check real-time traffic and allowing extra time for journeys is encouraged.

It should be noted that Google Maps may have glitches reporting road closures, potentially leading to unnecessary detours and traffic jams. Travelers are advised to verify traffic information through multiple sources, such as radio or official traffic reports, to ensure accuracy.

During holiday periods like the Ascension Day weekend, congestion is expected across Europe. By planning ahead and staying informed about traffic updates, travelers can help ensure a smoother journey.

  1. Aware of potential traffic issues during the Ascension Day weekend, persons planning trips should carefully consider adhering to the community policy of arranging trips during off-peak hours to navigate heavy traffic more easily, especially in northern Germany.
  2. Given the likelihood of heavy traffic during the extended Ascension Day weekend, holidaymakers are recommended to adjust their lifestyle by adopting flexible travel plans, possibly including traveling during peak hours in accordance with the employment policy of adopting alternative methods such as traveling early in the morning or later in the evening to minimize delays while traveling to and from locations in northern Germany, particularly around Hamburg.
