Train fare supplements for excess luggage: Introduced recently, these fees can become quite exorbitant

From July 2025, FlixTrain passengers will be charged an additional fee of €5.49 for each large piece of luggage, regardless of the journey length. This new policy applies to suitcases, musical instruments, and sports equipment that exceed typical carry-on dimensions.

The typical carry-on dimensions for trains, similar to those used by airlines, are around 55 x 35 x 25 cm. Larger suitcases that exceed these dimensions will incur the extra charge per piece on FlixTrain. Standard hand luggage or personal items are generally included without extra cost.

Each passenger may bring one stroller up to 30 kg for free. Baggage up to 10 kg and not larger than 40 cm x 21 cm x 55 cm is free. Larger pieces of baggage weighing up to 30 kg may not exceed external dimensions of 240 cm.

Hand luggage can be stored in the compartment above the seat or under the front seat. Stowage of very large suitcases, musical instruments, or sports equipment is not permitted in usual areas; passengers needing to bring these must book an additional seat.

There will be random baggage inspections on FlixTrain. Those who don't pay the surcharge and are caught will face a hefty fine. Wheelchairs and assistive devices must be registered in advance and at least 48 hours before travel. Unregistered baggage that exceeds the specified sizes during inspections will result in a fine, which is either double the fare or at least 60 euros.

FlixTrain passengers are required to pay a fine for unregistered baggage that exceeds the specified sizes during inspections. The airline competes with Deutsche Bahn and adheres to its General Terms and Conditions of Carriage, which state that small pieces of luggage such as hand luggage and small travel baggage remain free of charge.

Suitcases up to 20 kg and external dimensions of 50 cm x 30 cm x 80 cm cost €5.49 from July. A hand luggage item may not exceed 30 cm x 18 cm x 42 cm (B x W x H) and weigh 7 kg. Those traveling with larger suitcases, strollers, wheelchairs, or bulky additional baggage will have to pay extra and register it in advance. Hand luggage and small travel baggage remain included in the ticket price.

Travelers embarking on FlixTrain journeys from July 2025 might need to adjust their lifestyle, as larger suitcases exceeding typical dimensions will incur an additional fee. This fee, €5.49, applies to suitcases, musical instruments, and sports equipment that surpass the 55 x 35 x 25 cm dimensions usually considered within the carry-on limitations. However, standard hand luggage or personal items are still included in the ticket price.
