Travelers Warn of 'Authentic ID Crisis' as Some Recognize Continued Flight Access for Americans
Twist: Boarding Passes and Bumpy Skies Ahead as REAL ID Deadline Approaches
Let's chat about the looming REAL ID deadline and the chaos it's stirring at airports nationwide. Our Digital team caught up with Acting TSA Administrator Adam Stahl to shed light on how this new travel requirement might impact your vacation plans.
With the REAL ID implementation date set for Wednesday, May 7, many Americans can't help but voice their concerns about the new travel mandate.
Even though the TSA has launched a "Be your REAL ID self" campaign and reiterated that personal identification "must be a REAL ID to travel," some passengers have shared their frustrations about the latest airport policy update.
Over on social media, a Redditor voiced, "The REAL ID situation rhetoric seems to be toned down a bit."

"From 'must be REAL ID compliant' to 'may be subject to additional screening,' still get your REAL IDs, people," read another post, followed by a laughing emoji.
"Alright, go ahead and give me the extra screening then," joked another user.
So, what happens if you're not REAL ID compliant when you show up at the airport post-May 7? Well, according to transportation authorities, non-compliant passengers may face extra screening procedures instead of being outright denied boarding. (our Digital)
"Passengers presenting a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant at TSA checkpoints and who don't have another acceptable alternative form of ID will be notified of their non-compliance," our website Digital's TSA spokesperson explained.
The REAL ID appliance might mean additional hurdles for passengers and states alike.
In a Reddit thread on Tuesday titled, "REAL ID Apocalypse begins tomorrow" (a reference to May 7), users shared their theories.
"They said if you don't have a REAL ID, you can still pass through, but with a longer process," commented one user.
Another Redditor speculated, "I'm sure there will be loopholes. Heck, I've seen people fly with no ID at all, just extra security checks."

"Travelers need an updated REAL ID license or passport/passport card when traveling, but a lot of people won't have it," claimed one user.
One Redditor mentioned flying without a REAL ID, citing, "Homeland Security chief says travelers with no REAL ID can fly for now, but with likely extra steps."

On the TSA's website under "REAL ID," the agency outlines what will happen if a flyer does not present either a REAL ID or another compliant identification.
"Passengers who present a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant at TSA checkpoints and who do not have another acceptable alternative form of ID will be notified of their non-compliance, may be directed to a separate area, and may receive additional screening," it states.
Under the "security screening" section of the site, the agency notes additional screening procedures, such as a "pat-down screening."
"Additional security measures are in place from the time you get to the airport until you get to your destination," it states.

The agency adds, "TSA adjusts processes and procedures to meet the evolving threat and to achieve the highest levels of transportation security. Because of this, you may notice changes in our procedures from time to time."
So, buckle up—the increased security measures might lead to longer lines and delays at the airport. Get ready, and don't forget to bring your passport or REAL ID (or other accepted documents) to ensure a smooth journey! (our Digital)
